After two years of fundraising and preparation, the McGillivray Horne and School Association finally held the official ribbon cutting for McGillivray Public School's new playground equipment. Over $25,000 was raised through the donations of local ser- vice clubs, businesses and private citizens, bake sales and pop can drives among other fundraising activities. "As a small school the community support for this has been over- whelming," said McGillivray Gr. 8 teacher Drew Robertson. Above from left, Jane Hunter (Thames Valley School board trustee), Jim Sanders (Active Playground Equipment), Greg Sutton (school principal), Janet Baltessen and Bridget Watson (both members of the McGillivray Home and School Association) participate in the ribbon cutting ceremony to officially open the equipment. Below, students were eager to begin playing. History of Caven W.M.S. 1898-1998 Submitted by Caven Presbyterian W.M.S. hundred years! . Can you picture in your mind a group of perhaps eight or 10 women gathered around ' a big kitchen table in a ideal farm home'? Because of treasured pictures and detailed stories written, we can almost imagine we are among that group of women. Remember it was April: 1898 so a different scene comes to mind - the room. the clothing worn by the women. their hair styles etc. 1. can sec little ones on mothers' laps or playing nearby. Everything was different - no, not. everything Let us listen for a moment to the conversation. Under the. leadership of. Mrs. i Rei. 1 Martin. these women were making plans -to form an Auxiliary which would be the. foundation of a Women's Missionary Society. The first presi- dent was Mrs. F.W. Gladman. sec- retary Miss A. Martin and treasurer Miss Edith Moncur. This group of dedicated women had a vision. They were already involved in kkcal church and community activi- tic' but they knew. there was need beyond those horizons. They felt that. in response to the love of God, and to encourage.one another they should he involved in local and world mission. Through the following 100 years many changes have taken place. In 1914 the name Women's Foreign Missionary Society was changed to Women's Home Missionary Society. Later the word "Home" was dropped and W.D. (Western Division) was added. in 1898, Caven W.M.S. was part of the • ••s Huron Presbyterial but when Cavcn and Cromarty churches hccame a two-point charge in 1954. Caven voted to transfer from Huron to Stratford Presbyterial. It is now called Huron Perth Presbyterial. In 1972. due to changing times and conditions. it was felt wise to amal- gamate the W.M.S. and Caven. Congregational Circle into one organization, under one name, Presbyterian Church Women. Mission work remains an important part of the monthly meeting pro- gram and one of the chief objec- tives of each year's work continues to be the meeting of their financial allocation from the Presbyterial. At various times through the years Caven W.M.S. has sponsored -and provided leadership to the Mission Band, now called Children of the Church, the C.G.I.T. and Explorers. Certificates and seals, life mem herships and honorary life member- ships and pins have been presented to many women of the Auxiliary. To date, one male member was honored with an Honorary Life Membership - Rev. Charles Henderson. - it would be impossible to recog- nize the many faithful members who have served Caven W.M.S. during the last 100 years. Many gave of their time and talents giv- ing leadership in office both in the local auxiliary and in the Presbyterial - even in Synodical and Council. Others gave their ded- icated support often by sacrifices not surpluses. Old minute hooks and records show the years of labor and sums of money given to the support of the mission of the church in Canada and around the •world. If our founding members of 1898 could drop in to see Caven W.M.S. 100 years later. they would see many changes. We can look hack: but they couldn't envision the world of 1998. Things would he strange and different but under the surface they would realize the arm of our W.M.S. is still the sank. We arc "Women with a Purpose - to encourage one another and all peo- ple of the church. to he involved in ,local and world mission through prayer, study, service and fellow- ship." A centennial in any group is a heart-warming achievement. We pay tribute to the women who have sacrificed so others in many cor- ners of thc world might hear the good news of Jesus Christ. it is not possible for us to even try to imag- ine the world in 2098. Like our ancestors we can• he faithful "Labourers together with God" reaching out in whole -hearted ser- vice for the fulfillment of the motto which we embrace. It is impossible to determine. nor will we ever know. what influence Caven W.M.S. members have had on our fellow "pilgrims" during the last 100 years. Nor do we -know the goodboth physically and spiritually our contributions have made. Satisfaction will he ours if we remain faithful to our commitment. Under the leadership of our 1998 officers, Jean Easton, Lil McLellan, Edna Simmons and Pauline Simmons, we look forward to the beginning of thc next 100 years. leaving -behind us a record of con- tinuing faithful service. 2 So SCH In the presence of the Honourable Ms. Elizabeth Witmer, Minister of Health THE STRATFORD GENERAL HOSPITAL BOARD OF DIRECTORS Invite you toThe new MATERNAL/CHILD UNIT GRAND OPENING CEREMONY THURSDAY, JUNE 18 AT 9:00 A.M.
