On Monday morning, Armstrong wouldn't reveal which municipal office was being considered because leasing negotiations were ongoing. At its meeting on June 10, the board voted to list its administra- tive offices at 210 Water St. and 429 Britannia St. in Stratford for sale and reorganize its departments until a permanent site is found for the newly amalgamated Huron County Board of Education and the Perth County Board of Education. Accounting and human resouces; staff working out of the Water St. office and Central Huron Secondary School, Clinton, will be . relocated to four unused classrooms in Seaforth as well as to a municpal office. Operations and technical support staff on Brittania St. will be moved to Stratford Northwestern Secondary School.Although the board agreed to put the issue of finding a permanent headquarters for the board on hold for two years, Architects are in SDHS design- ing the new office space. Armstrong said she expects the board will be in its new locations by September. . Exeter farm boy honored by UWO Bill Etherington receives honorary degree By Katherine Harding TA Reporter LONDON - On Friday, Exeter area native Bill Etherington, 57, received a honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Western Ontario. Since Etherington's graduation from Western 35 years ago with an electrical engineering degree he has gone onto achieve success in the world of international busi- ness. Etherington's resume is im- pressive. Working at IBM since 1964, he has served as IBM Canada's pres- ident and CEO, general manager of IBM Europe, Middle East and Africa and he recently was pro- moted to IBM's senior vice- president and group executive of sales and distribution. Etherington was "delighted" by the honorary degree. "When I left Western 35 years ago I never thought I'd come back to receive something like this," he said. "I've come a long way from the farm." Etherington attributes the foun- dations of his success to his farm- ing background. "From working on the farm I developed a strong work ethic," he said. "My farm training gave me tremendous resilience." Despite the tremendous de- mands of his job which he de- scribes as a seven day a week commitment, Etherington loves his job. "I'm fascinated by everything," he said. "This is a fascinating time for this industry. As much as it has changed, it is just starting." Since he's worked at IBM 8111 Etherington (right) being congratulated by University of Western Ontario Chancellor Peter Godsoe after he received his honorary Doctor of Laws degree from UWO on Friday. Etherington estimates that he has changed jobs within the company on average of every 18 months to two years. "My secret was:when ever a job was needed to be done I'd do it," he said. Etherington also points out hav- ing a high energy level was im- portant in getting to the top. "Business is a contact sport. You have to be ready to get out on to the field and compete," he said. On Saturday, Etherington visit- ed his parents Archie and Alma at their Exeter residence. Returning home to the area brought back a lot of memories • for Etherington. "Dad just reminded me that the Hensall fair is on this week- end...the first money -I ever made was from selling a calf at the Hensall Fair," he said. Etherington is currently living in Paris, France with his wife Barb. Because of the recent job promotion they will be relocating to White Plains, New York. Despite the Etherington's globe-trotting, the couple plans to move back to Canada when Bill retires. "The reality is the country I like the best is Canada," he said. The Etherington's have two children, Jill, 28, and Mike, 25. Dash wood's own • } a OW - It's officla ' ribbon c Commuj Jonathon ron MPP le special Gord Lavis.' Seaforth were angry the Avon Maitland District School Board said four classrooms in Seaforth District High School (SDHS) are unused. In September, the board will move some of its operations into four classrooms on the school's sec- ond floor. "These classrooms have always been in use. We feel it's a misrepre- sentation of the school," said Maureen Agar, chairperson of the SDHS parent council. Chairperson Abby Armstrong admitted that calling the classrooms "unused space" wasn't accurate. However, some of those class- . rooms are unused two or three peri- ods per day. "There is nothing that sits there unused. But it's space that's not needed," she said. Principal Bruce Eccle.s has enough space to schedule classes in September but the board's presence in four classrooms "will make it tighter," said Armstrong. "Having some board offices in the school will be a positive experi- ence for the staff," she said. "It grounds people and reminds them what they are doing," she said, referring to working in schools, alongside students. Agar said the parent council was at first pleased to learn some board departments were moving in."We were willing to make it work if it keeps the school open and gives the community a chance to find ways to keep it open in the future," said Agar. Over the last couple of years, the school has battled a perception that it will close. Agar said she fears it could become a self-fulfilling prophecy, especially if people think the school has unused space.
