Dave Farquhar got things rolling for the Cenis when he took a nice feed from Luke Sims and beat two defenders before kicking past the charging keeper. Dan Martens was brought down hard in the Chatham penalty area a few minutes later and Nick Szabo buried the penalty shot to give Exeter a 2-0 lead. - Martens opened up the second half with a nice run down the right side and an even nicer shot inside the far post. Luke Sims completed Exeter's scoring when he took a pass from Farquhar and calmly waited for the keeper to commit before hitting the twine with his shot. Szabo, Mark Bell and Mark -Lynn controlled the Ccnts defence and forced Chatham strikers to shoot from the outside yielding them few chances. • Newcomers Ernie Szabo and John D'lai:ni played well between the pipes for Exeter to share the shutout. • The Cents record improves to 3-2 and their next game is at Canners. Express make Tillsonburg consolation final TILLSONBURG — The Exeter Express senior hardball team gave it their best effort but they just fell short of. taking home the consola- tion pennant from the Tillsonburg tournament on the weekend. Exeter lost game one to Kitchen- er 5-1. "This was a game of missed op- portunities as we left 11 runners stranded on the bases," assistant coach Joc Fulop said. "it's a gamc we could have easily won — we had ninc hits." Exeter's Terry Genttner hit an RBi single in the 2nd for the team's offensive highlight. Fred Gregus was the star at the plate for the Ex- press with a single and a triple. Doubles were swatted by Rick Boon and J.J. Anderson while Scott Russell added two singles with Vic Oliveira and Dave Russell both hit- ting a single apiece. Mark Glavin called a good game behind the plate for the Express and smothered several balls in the dirt. The rest of the defence wasn't at its best and committed three errors that led to three unearned runs. Starting pitcher Dan Masse went the distance for Exeter and allowed five runs on eight hits while strik- ing out eight. Exeter bested Cambridge 11=6 in game two by scoring two in thc third inning, four in the fourth, two in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh. Scott Russell pitched the first five innings allowing live runs on seven hits with one KO. Rick Boon fin- ished the game allowing one run on three hits. The Express bats came alive in the game: Mark Regicr hit a long home run while Oliveira needed only a homer to complete hitting for the cycle. Gregus, Scott Russell and Anderson all had two singles, Dave Hawke was hot with four sin- gles while Mike Agnew and Scott Kemp added their own singles. Outfielders Oliveira, Gregus and Agnew had great defensive games in very windy conditions while the rest of the 'D' allowed only one er- ror. In addition to his homer, Regier put on a baserunning clinic by scor- ing from first on Oliveira's triple. Exeter doubled Walsingham 10-5 in gamc three. The Express ex- ploded for seven runs in thc first and never looked back. Pitcher Marty Merner kept thc opposing batters off balance al- lowing nine hits, five runs while striking out five. Exeter executed two double plays in the game, the first on a good throw by Regier and thc second on another strong toss by Dave Rus- sell. Exctcr hits came from Oliveira with two doubles, Gregus with two singles, Boon with two singles and a double, Hawke with a homer, Re- gicr with a homer and a single and' Dave Russell and Kemp with sin- gles. Exctcr ended thc tournament by getting blasted by Dundas 12-2 in the consolation final. Dundas pounded four Exeter pitchers for 12 hits while Express bats could only manage singles by Gregus, Boon, Hawke, Anderson and Kemp and a double by Scott Russell.
