New businesses up and running
By Kate Monk

EXETER - It was graduation
night last Wednesday at the Bay-
berry Cafe in Exeter. Not from nur-
sery school, high school or even
college, but the latest Women and
Rural Economic Development busi-
ness course.
The women from southwestern
Ontario — including Kim Pearce
from the Kirkton area and Margaret
Reid of Clinton — have all started
their own businesses during the
past year, thanks in pan to the 42 -
week Self Start Program.
Facilitated by Vicki Lass, the
course helped the women develop
business ideas, write business plans
and start and onerate their own
small businesses.
The course has 21 classes and is
augmented by consultation.
"The hope is they're up and run-
ning during that 42 weeks," Lass
said.
This class was successful in that
goal. A wide range of businesses
have been spawned: photography,
landscape -architecture,furniture
manufacturing and retailing, cloth-
ing, retail, restaurant and horse
breeding.
WRED assists 120-200 business
starts a year. The Stratford office
covers southwestern Ontario. There
are four offices across Ontario.
The Community Enterprise Op-
portunities Through Partnerships
course is starting in the fall, of
which the Self -Start Program is an
element. People •can contact the
WRED office in Stratford at 273-
5017 to enroll.
• Lass says enthusiasm is the most
important prerequisite for people
who would like to access WRED

programs — a business background
is not essential. WRED staff can
help entrepreneurs realize their vi-
sion of starting a small business.
"We run idea and feasibility
workshops to develop ideas and
check the feasibility and help them
find their passion," Lass said.
One-on-one consultations are
also valuable to people who want to
take their existing business or hoo-
by to the next level. They may only
need five hours of consultation rath-
er_ than a 42 -week course.
WRED's resource library has an
extensive array of information on
running a business. Additional
member resources will be de-
veloped more in the coming year.
Some services are on a fee-for-
service basis and to borrow materi-
