Children the victims
of second-hand
tobacco smoke
HURON COUNTY - The Coali-
tion for a -Smoke-free Huron -Perth
is supporting the World .Health Or-
ganization's focus on 'Growing Up
Without Smoke' for World No To-
bacco •Day on May 31. This day's
theme. brings home the message
that. children have become the un-
willing victims of second-hand
smoke in their communities espe-
cially in public places, like restau-
rants.
"Second-hand smoke -- the stuff
that is exhaled by people who
smoke, and the smoke that comes
from the burning end of a cigarette
-- is the most dangerous form of in-
door air pollution," stated Heather
Kehl, co -chairperson for the Coali-
tion for a Smoke-free Huron -Perth.
"Most people know that second-
hand smoke is dangerous, but few
people understand that children
who breathe, second-hand smoke
get more colds, ear infections,
bronchitis and asthma. Each year in
Canada, up to 3,500 healthy non
smokers die from being exposed to
second-hand smoke."
The Coalition for a Smoke-free
Huron -Perth is distributing an up-
dated version of the brochure Go-
ing out to Eat? Enjoy Smoke-free
Dining in Huron- and Perth. Since
the brochure was printed one year
ago, five more restaurants in Huron
County have chosen to provide
smoke-free dining. Stickers stating
"I would like a smoke-free environ
ment. Please consider making your
restaurant smoke-free" arc also
available to give patrons a way to
voice their concerns and let restau-
rant owners know their preferences.
Research shows that levels of
second-hand smoke in restaurants
are about twice ashigh as in work-
places that permit smoking, and
one and a half times higher than
living in a home with one smoker.
Choosing to sit in non-smoking
sections of the restaurant does not 1
necessarily protect you from the ef-
fects of second-hand smoke. By
choosing smoke-free restaurants,
you can protect you from the ef-
fects of second-hand smoke. We
are all responsible for the health of
children around us.

A Point to Ponder
by Rev. Vernon Dean
Exeter Pentecostal Tabernacle
Jana Bombed( in her book entitled, "If life is a bowl of cher-
ries, what am I doing in the pits?" tells the following story.
It seems that when Erma' was a child, whenever she would
d
ride in the front seat of the car with her moni, her mother
would always reach out and protect her if she needed to stop the car
quickly. Some years ago after Erma had grown up, she was driving
with her mother in the front seat of the car next to her. As Erma
needed to stop quickly, she instinctively reached over to protect her
mother from being injured from the sudden stop.
When this happened, each of the ladies looked at each other with a
look of recognition that something dramatic had happened in their
relationship. Erma then asked the readers this question, "When does
the mother become the daughter and the daughter the mother'?"
Erma then shared some of those memories that indicate how
quickly her mom nee4ed daughter -like attention. "Mom, remember
to wear your sweater when we go to the mall. You know how cold it
can be." "Enna, would you dial the phone number for me. You
know I can't remember very good any more." "Mom, would you set
the table? I'll work on stuffing the turkey this year."
The Bible tells us how quickly this life of ours is over, "Whereas
ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is
even a vapour, that appears for a little time, and then vanishes
away." (James 4:14)
Is the point of our lives making a difference?
