Cents tall to
SaintT2-1
EXETER - The Exeter Cen-
tennials senior men's soccer team
couldn't find their scoring touch
in a 2-1 home loss to St. Thomas
'B' at Canners Field on Sunday
evening.
Cents keeper/spokesperson
George McEwan said his team
gave away another three points in
the Western Ontario Soccer
League Division 11 standings to
"weaker opposition" as they were
unable to capitalize on their few
scoring opportunities.
• An early penalty shot goal
against Exeter set the stage giv-
ing the visitors a 1-0 lead after
five minutes.
The Cents recovered well and
dominated the rest of the first
half, but were unable to get good
scoring chances.
The second half opened with
yet another penalty shot awarded
against Exeter. St. Thomas didn't
let the chance for a 2-0 lead to slip away.
Exeter's Dan Martens was able to bring his
team to within one goal by •shelving a shot
from 30 yards out behind the St. Thomas
keeper with 15 minutes to play.
But St.
Thomas kept Cents shooters at hay
and hung on for the win.
The Centennials next host Blucwater Pre-
mier in Cup play tonight at Canners Field at
6:3() p.m.
Wrong guess. Exeter Centennials goal-
keeper George McEwan gets scored
on by a St. Thomas player on a pen-
alty kick during their game at Canners
Field on Sunday. Exeter lost 2-1.

Ontario tug-of-war qualifying
round to be held in Dashwood
By Katherine Harding
T -A Reporter
STEPHEN TOWNSHIP - The Blucwater Tug -
of -War team and the Friedshurg Days Committee
are teaming up. to bring a provincial qualifying
tug-of-war competition to Dashwood this August
long weekend.
'The announcement was made Wednesday hy
Friedshurg Days co-chair Karen Schadc.
The 1}luewater team which was horn out of the
14th Sodhusters team that was established in
1982, hopes to be a major contender at Friedshurg
Days.
Blucwater team member Erich Freitcr com-
mented that the Dashwood based team has big
goals for this season.
"Through diligence and training we even hope
to go on and represent Canada at the world com-
petition." Freitcr said.
For the first year ever the team is being
coached. Jim Connolly a London resident who
originally hails from Waterford. Ireland has been
guiding both the men's and women's teams
through two to three practices per week.
Freiter is excited about Connolly's presence in
the club.
"I have taken the team to the limit of my ex-
perience," he said. "Jim is the person that can
take us that extra step."
Ontario Tug -of -War president Malcolm Mon-
teith was on hand to hear the Friedsburg Day an-
nouncement and promote the sport.
Monteith said that tug-of-war is making sig-
nificant strides to be reinstated back into the
Olympics. When the modern Olympics began
again in 1896, it was an event but in thc 1920s it
was dropped from competition.
The sport currently meets all thc requirements
to be reinstated including having more than 25
countries as members in an international gov-
erning organization. Monteith also commented
that the Tug -of -War international Federation
president is a member of the International Olym-
pic Committee.
"The history of the sport is there...now we just
have to build it up again," said Monteith.
The Bluewater Tug -of -War women's team is
shown here practicing outside Dashwood last
week. The club will hold a provincial qual-
ifying meet during Friedsburg Days.

lir Huron -Perth in 15 events, what
co -coach Phil Conley said are the
hest results lot the school's track
and field team in recent memory.
"It's onlygoing to get better,"
Pennington said. "We'll have more
