Understanding Lizzie
in Blood Relations
Katherine Harding
T -A Reporter
Theatre -goers were treated to a
superb production of the psycho-
logical drama Blood Relations, per-
formed by South Huron District
' High School drama students last
Thursday and Friday.
Written by Sandra Pollock,
Blood Relations takes an intriguing
look into the life and motives of the
legendary Lizzie Borden.
While Borden was ultimately, ac-
quitted of murdering her father and
step -mother with an axe in 1892,
she spent the rest of her life living
under a cloud of suspicion.
During the trial her defence law-
yer claimed that no woman being
of the weaker sex could have been
capable of committing such a
bloody and violent crime, however
many doubted her innocence.
Even school children created the
infamous rhyme, "Lizzie Borden
took an axe. Gave her mother 40
whacks, When the job was nicely
done, she gave her father 4I!"
The play is set 10 years after the
trial where we find Lizzie living
with her older sister Emma in the
same house the heinous murders
took place. An actress friend comes
to visit and attempts to find the
truth of Lizzie's guilt or innocence.
As the audience is drawn into the
heart and mind of Lizzie through
flashbacks, they are left to decide
the truth.
Despite a temporary power fail-
ure before the beginning of act two,
the excellent staging of Blood Re-
lations contributed to the success of
this production.
All seven actors gave exemplary
and memorable performances.
Sarah Vermunt (Miss Lizzie/
Bridget) and Vanessa Laye's (Ac-
tress/Lizzie) portrayal of the in-
tricate character Lizzie Borden was
especially impressive. •
Drama teacher and play director
Beth Jantzi and the entire cast of
Blood Relations should be com-
mended for their thoughtftil and de-
licious attempt at understanding
'such a complex script. ,

nessa Laye (Actress/Lizzie)
