Principal Bill Allen said he was pleased that 39 of the 85 graduating students achieved marks of at least 75 per- cent average in the last two terms to reach the honors status. At Friday's formal dance at SHDHS, students of the year were • named. They are Leigh Soldan and Clark Adams. • 20 YEARS AGO May 25, 1978 - A lull in altercations at the Fleck Manufacturing .picket line ended this week as United Auto Workers and OPP offi• - cers engaged in several forays at Huron Park. At its latest meeting, .Stephen township council authorized their solicitors to take the nec- essary legal steps to stop strikers from blocking the roadways and hindering traffic to other industries and Centralia College. Two girls working as Candy Striper volunteers at South Huron Hospital have completed 200 hours. They arc Brenda Pepper and - Susan Chapman. 35 YEARS AGO May 25, .1963 - After a patient wait for hot weather, crowds lined the beach at Grand Bend Sunday to take advantage of the bright sun and 80 -plus temperatures. Councillor Ralph Bailey is Exeter's new deputy reeve. His seat as councillor will be filled by Derry Boyle. Eight babies, all boys, were born at South Huron Hospital in just over 24 hours last week. - Jens Gravlev won a prize for a.junior exhibit at the SHDHS sci- ence fair. He demonstrated photo,cjectric control. The first class to he taught at the new Precious Blood School re- ceived. their first communion at Si Peter's Church, Sunday. They were instructed by Father Jaynes Kelly and principal Mrs. C. Mittel- holtz. 40 YEARS AGO May 26; 1958 - Hensall council authorized the creation of more parking space near the. business section at its meeting Monday night. The lot at the back of the town hall will be gravelled for cars. Arthur B. Idle, principal of Exeter Public School was elected pres- •ident of the Huron Local of the Ontario Public Mcn's Teachers Fed- eration at the annual meeting in Hensall Wednesday evening. Hon. William Nickle,, Ontario minister of planning and develop- ment officially opened the John A. Morrison Dam Wednesday after- noon: Next week is "Hi Neighbour" in Exeter stores. They will be stress- ing f.iendliness'and appreciation as well as special values. Other features include a free street dance and hand concerts. 50 YEARS AGO May 25, 1948 - H. L. Sturgis was elected president of the'Exeter Lions Club for 1948-49. The Rebekah Lodge celebrated its first birthday Wednesday eve- ning. Aviation's newest and greatest discovery, jet compulsion, will be on display Saturday at RCAF Centralia. . Eric Carscadden was appointed assessor by Exeter council at their meeting Monday night. . Eric; Heywood and his war bride Terry, arrived in Exeter the be- ginning of the week .-For nearly a year, Eric has been stationed with the navy in Ireland. Ted Pooley recently shipped 150 turkey eg'gs to England by air. They arrived in perfect condition. 75 YEARS AGO May 26, 1923 - Mr. Vernon Hedden has accepted a position as clerk in the department store of Mr. T.C. Joynt of Hensall. Thursday afternoon last, fire started at the Exeter railway station. It had broken out at the southeast corner of the` platform and the wind was blowing directly towards the building. A bucket brigade carried water from the cellar and had the lire under control when firemen arrived. At the UEO convention in Hensall Thursday, Mr. W.H. Medd was elected 10 carry the standard in the comink provincial election. Rev. James Foote left Monday for Sarnia where he will take the bo 1t for Port Arthur to attend the General Assembly of the Presby- terian Church. HENSALL - Ice carving work- shops for chefs and others in the hospitality industry are held regu- larly at the Iceculture plant in Hen- sall. Recently, Mark Daukas, a former world and six time US National Ice Carving Champion held hack to back courses on advanced ice carv- ing techniques and attracted partici- pants from New York, Michigan and the United Kingdom. The students joined Iceculture staff for the intensive three day workshops. Says Daukas, "it is not very ,often you can Lind a facility suitable for handling a large class. The. Summer Experience Pro- , gram (SEP) provides students with summer jobs in each of Ontario's Ministries thrdughout the province. There are placements immediately. as many of these positions arc cur- rently acing filled. The Summer Job Service (SIS), which operates out of Conestoga College in our area, provides sever- al services to students and employ- ers. Subsidies are available for $2. per hour to employers who hire up to three students this summer. SJS will also recruit jobs seeking stu- dents to match the job requirements for employers. Students get in- volved in their resume writing and job search workshops this summer. For those students wishing to start their own business, up to $3000 are available through the Student Venture Loan. In co- operation with the Royal Bank, the Ontario government gives students between the ages of 15 and 29 an opportunity to create a business plan and present it to the -Loans De- partment of the Royal Bank by Jura: 12. - Summer Career Placerhents (SCP) are part of the federal gov- ernment's Youth Employment and Learning Strategy to prepare young people for the work force. SCP pro- vides wage contributions to both tor -profit and not-for-profit em- ployers who create summer jobs for students. SCP grants have already been awarded for this summer, however, interested employers may wish to call the Human Resource Centre for Students to ensure that they receive an application for Summer 1999. Through Young Canada Works (YCW), another part of the federal government's Youth Employment Strategy,' 2,300 Canadian young people will have the chance to earn money and develop new skills. In- ternship programs are also availa- ble for college and university grad- uates. Students arc encouraged to find out about YCW and many oth- er employment related opportuni- ties in the federal government's publication of "Youth Link".
