Students and educators honored at Excellence in Public Educatlon banquet
GODERICH - The Thirteenth
Annual Excellence in Public Edu-
cation banquet was held on Tues-
day, April 28 at the Goderich
Township Hall in Holmesville. The
banquet is held annually to cele-
brate the contributions of students,
teachers, support staff, and mem-
bers of the local community in pro-
moting excellence within the Huron
public education system. The ban-
quet was co-sponsored by The
Avon Maitland District School
Board and District 45 of the Onta-
rio Secondary School Teachers'
Federation.
Shane Wilcox of Huron Park re-
ceived a certificate for his entry in
the 1997 Marion Drysdale Compe-
tition, "Follow . your dreams".
Shane's painting "Dream Path"was
a regional winner in competition
with entries from all of Southwest-
ernOntario. .
The following students were hon-
ored for their contributions to
South Huron -District High School:
Julie Darling - Music plays a cen-
tral role in the life of Julie -Darling.
She is a member of the school's
Jazz. and Concert Bands, as well as
the accompanist for the Triple Trio
and Concert Choir. In addition to
her musical talents, . Darling has
been active with school organiza-
tions such as O.S.A.1.D., Peer Men -
;goring, F'eer Tutoring, and the Guid-
ance support -team. Darling has
been on the Honour Roll every
year. In 1996 she attended the On-
tario Ethical onal • Leadership
D Camp, and was- a delegate for En-
counters with Canada... Her very
proud parents arc Joe and Diane
Darling of Exeter.
Terri Hamather. - Terri, and OAC
• student, has been a very active and
energetic participant in 'many dif-
ferent aspects of school life. She is
the Co -Deputy Premier of the Stu-
dent Council, head of the Prefects,
and serves as a student representa-.
five to the. School Advisory Coun-
cil: Hamather has represented
South Huron at leadership confer-
ences in Ottawa, and at the U.W.O..
Hamather has also played •clarinet
in -the Concert Band for four years.
Shc plans tri attend universary next
year to study Social Sciences. Terri
is the daugh.er of Cindy and
Wayne Hamather of Exeter.
Lori Richardson - Lori was • one
of the driving forces behind South
Huron's "Power Walk '97", which
saw the student body walk • from
Exeter to Kirkton in order. to raise
funds for the school and the United
Way of Huron County. A talented
athlete, Richardson has played vol-
leyball, badminton,. curling, and
soccer. She was named junior ath-
lete of the year in 'Grade 10. She
has been a member of the field
hockey team every year, and won
gold with the team at OFSAA in
1994. Lori is currently the chairper-
son of the Athletic council, and a
member of Student Council. In the
words of her nominator, Richard-
son -is energetic, organized, hard
working and has great ideas! Rich-
adson's proud parents are.Don and
Janis Richardson of Plugtown, near
Exeter.
Dave Robilliard - Dave personi-
fies the axiom "you get out of life
what you put into it". He is a very
hard working and active young
man. Robilliard is a very talented
and versatile musician, playing a
variety of instruments in the
school's award winning Jazz and
Concert Bands. He is also an excel-
lent athlete, playing volleyball, bas-
ketball, soccer, badminton, and run-
ning both track and cross country.
Dave ran all the way to Kirkton for
the Powerwalk. Robilliard has rep-
resented South Huron twice at the
Ontario Educational Leadership
Camps for Music and Physical Ed-
ucation. In addition to his extra cur-
ricular activities. Robilliard has
maintained very good marks. He is
the son of Bob and Sandy Robilli-
ard of Exeter.
Marcy Swance - Marcy is very
pleasant and hard working young
woman, respected by her teachers
and admired by her peers. Swance
has been involved with the music
program since Grade Nine, playing
trumpet and the very demanding
I Ilugelhgrn with the Concert and
i Jazz Bands, as well as accompany-
! ing the choir on piano. Swance has
served as Junior Treasurer on Stu-
dent Council, and' is a student rep-
resentative to the School Advisory
Council and the OSSSA. Swance
I organized the• school's Christmas
Bureau campaign, providing a
needed service to the community,
and projecting a positive image for
the school. She was honored as stu-
dent of the month for January

The teacher award recipient was
Janice Shore - "Ask a busy person
and you'll get the job done". If you
need something accomplished, ask
Janice Shore. Not even a broken
ankle earlier this year could slow
Shore down. She has been the Stu-
dent Council Staff Advisor, a coach
for the volleyball and curling
teams, an active member of the
Formal Committee, Panther Fun -
Fest, and a Team Leader. As a Co-.
op teacher Shore has worked close-
ly with the business community to
promote close ties between the
school and local companies. She
also organized "Take Our Kids to
Work" for the Grade Nines. In
Shore's special co-op program she
works with high risk students -
those with low self esteem, truancy,
and behaviour problems. In her
honest, no-nonsense way, she
teaches them to believe in them-
selves and their abilities, and has
made a lasting impression on their
lives.
Marina • Jaques received the
award for support staff. Jaques has
been a teaching assistant with the
hoard for 25 years, working • with
special •needs students in the Chal-
lenging Learning Needs program.
Jaques has a wonderful manner
with her students - so kind, gentle,
and patient, yet firm. Jaques' ex-
pectations of the students are very
high. She helps, the students to
achieve the goals they never
though were possible, and can he
very proud of the role she has
played in helping them to succeed.
Jaques is always willing to give her
work an extra effort, and presents
an excellent example to the stu-
dents and staff whom she works
with.
South Huron's community award
winner was Ellison Travel. Since
its inception at South Huron, the
Co-operative Education Program
has been able to rely on the sure
support of Doug Ellison and Elli-
son Travel. Ellison and his staff
have provided students with a tre-
mendous opportunity to learn and
work in a business setting. The stu-
dents placed with Ellison Travel
have been exposed to all aspects of
operating a busy and • successful
travel agency. A number of the stu-
dents placed with Ellison Travel
have gone on to study travel and
tourism at college. In addition, Elli-
son Travel has always offered ex-
cellent service for school groups.

well as being a resource for stu-
dents who need information on for-
eign destinations. The support of
Doug Ellison and Ellison Travel is
greatly appreciated by the students
and staff at South Huron. Accept-
