Consultations about
school councils begin
TORONTO - The Education Im-
provement Commission (EIC) re-
leased ,a discussion paper to begin
consultations about the role of par-
ents in their children's schools.
The discussion paper is entitled
The Future Role of School Coun-
cils. In it, the. Commission asks
how schools, parents, communities
and school councils can, Wol-k to-
gether to ensure that children get
the best possible education.
"I believe that parents' active in-
' volvement in schools is the best
way for them to help their children
achieve," says Ann Vanstone, co-
chair of' the EIC. "And school
councils are a good way for parents
to get involved."
The Commission is encouraging
parents, educators and members of
the 'community to consider the six
questions in the discussion paper.
"I hope every single school in the
province gets involved. That's why
we've put a consultation kit on our
web site and a response form in the
discussion paper. We're looking
, forward to thousands of responses,"
says Commission chair Dave
Cooke.
English and French copies of the
discussion paper are being mailed
to schools across Ontario. It is also
available in eight other languages,
Arabic, Chinese, Italian, Portu-
guese, Somali, Spanish, Tamil and
Vietnamese, on the EIC web site at
http://eic.edu.gov.on.ca
The deadline for submissions is
October 1998.
The EIC is consulting the public
and conducting research and will
issue a report about the future role
of school councils by the end of the
year.

The last regular dance of the school year was held on Thursday,
May 14. Everyone was let into the dance free of charge. The crowd
was made up of mostly grade nine and ten students. There were lots
of prizes given away and the music was good. Thanks to everyone
who came out. The next dance this year is the formal for students in
grades 12 and OAC. The formal will be held on Friday, June 5. Listen
to announcements for dates of ticket sales.
The annual "Nutrithon" put on by the peer helpers will be held on
Tuesday, May 26. The Nutrithon is a fun, messy and yes -nutritional
team food relay. In past years it has included eating mounds of spa-
ghetti, passing oranges between necks, eggs on spoons and the dan-
gerous combination of ice cream and blind folds. If past years are any
indication, this year's Nutrithon is guaranteed to be fun!
Also on the night of May 26, is Arts Night. The Arts Council has or-
ganized this night for any art student to showcase their work. It will
be held at the school at 7 p.m. Everyohe is welcome to attend and see
South Huron's artistic talent on display.
Student council election week is underway. Posters are up and cam-
paigns have begun. An assembly for speeches will be held in the large
gym at 9 a.m. on Friday May 22. Voting will take place at noon on
Friday.
The school is hosting a Volunteer Recognition Coffee Break in the
cafeteria on Wednesday, May 27. Over one hundred invitations have
been sent out to various people in the community who have been vol-
unteers helping our school. The coffee break is a small token of appre-
ciation for all the work parents and members of the community have
done this year. The coffee break will be held from 10-10:30 a.m.
