Anglers rejoice! Here comes the Salmon & Trout Derby
By Craig Bradford
T -A Reporter
GRAND BEND - Ah. the hen-
pfits of fishing on Lake Huron.
The calming effect of the rolling
waves; the thrill of hooking an up
to over 40 Ili -zaln►on and the battle
to get it into, the boat.; the sheer joy
of leaving your troubles behind for
a day while being exactly • where
you want to be. doing exactly what
you want to do.
Those attractions, as well as cash/
prizes totalling S25,0Q0, arc part
and parcel (if the 10th annual Grand
Bend Salmon- & Trout Derby' that
runs from Friday till,May 24. -
Area media reps were treated 10 a
day out fishing on Lake Huron by
derby volunteers, last week to help
promote the event. This writer did
the T -A proud and walked oft with
the unofficial hest • angler Mk by
hauling in the only two fish worthy
to be brought, hack to shore 'over
the past three annual media days --
a 7 lb Chinook Salmon' and a 2.6 th
Lake Trout'.
The other two media types. Lake-
shore Advance editor Dave Scdtt
and • reportier Ellen Douglas. had a
, great time. Scott spent the day on'
Grand Rend Harbor Master Bob
Roney's. hoot. •,Scott once •again
didn't catch anything hut good

Dduglas actually caught a fish)
with the help of Fish Tales Charters
but the fish vyas a tad iinv. so it was
released to grow some more.
' I was helped by derby chairper-'
son Tim Steele of Dashwood who
took, me out on:'thc lake in -his 216'
Pennyan named 'Bowhunter'.
We fished off Port Franks. some-
times just south of the Pinery:. and
other times a little farther south off
the mouth of the Ausable River

sunny .skies and glassy water' sur-,
face.- build wasn't perfect for fish-
ing. Steele said salmon and trout
prefer somewhat -overcast skies and
choppier waters.
Other than the condiuons. Stecic
said it takes more than luck io catch
_ fish out on , the lake that include ,
Chinook and Coho salmon and
Rainbow, Brown and Lakc trout.
"What we try, is to do all the little
things right," Steele said while
sharpening the hooks on a•lure.
That includes making sure all the
trolling lines are fresh, the hooks
arc sharp and the boat speed is right
just to name a few of• those little
things.
Stecic explained anglers havc to
adapt to the lake's conditions and
that anglers won't find .much suc-
cess if they- simply develop a set -
pattern and stick to it.
"1f they aren't hitting, .try, some-
thing different," he said. .
If a certain colored spoon doesn't
work. "try another color; try differ-
ent depths and speeds..
That's cxactlh• what Stcelc and 1
did to catch the two• adlmittedly
small fish we returned to shore
with. We carted in 42'-45' feet a
water one and a half'to t)vo miles
from shore.- then went .to 48''-52'
with Steck frequently changing to
different lures including'. a few'. of
his -over 200 different spoons and
'hcidy baits' (lures that ropy the
. shape and movcment'of,minnows).
I caught both tishin 50' of water.
Both were ,caught on the same pole
and outrigger, on the main line sus-
pended at 33'. with the same lure, a
green on green Pro King -spoon. ,
It was Steele's fishing expertise
and skillful. trolling skills that land-
ed the two fish,- not anything this
reporter did.
"You'have to (10 everything right
to catch a hig fish." Steele re-
minded.
Those whit are used to • fishing
•from the shore or at conservation
areas ,will get quite a different ex-
peridnce while 'angling on the hig
lake .while out with' friends lucky
enough to own their own boat or on
a charter, Not only - itre you sur-
rounded M water instead offcithet
having both feet punted on terra
firma or within ,Spitting distance of
shore, the fishing action is also dif-
ferent r
:'They're' like hulls." Steele said
oI; hig take fish like salmon • and
trout when .they decide they want to
taste your lure. 'They , take it, and
)run." :
While I. a long-time hig lake an-
gler want -to -he, have no problem

hig bucks to make their dream of
spending all summer out on ' the
lake fishing come true; others may
need ti) he fi,llcd rn) , .
"It's relakin'g and exciting at the
same time," Steele said when asked
why he loves lake fishing. "It's the
most .challenging kind of fishing.
There's days you'll go out and you,
won't . get anything. Then there's
others you'll get 10 fish."
After about five and half hours
on .the lake, the derhy volunteers
treated the media reps land them-
tcivcs)to a barbecue back' at Grand
Bend's Pint -Dale Motor Inn that in-
cluded hamburgers. •hotdogs, sau-
sages and (naturally) whiteefish and
