Help with shopping. Edna Deitz, a Queensway volunteer,
shows her mother, Queensway resident Mary Broadfoot,
some styles from Geri Fashions.
HENSALL - You wont find dat-
ed styles among the racks of Geri
Fashions; a travelling boutique ser-
vicing many area seniors who lack
the time or transportation to shop
for clothes.
The London-based business sets -
up shop at Southwestern Ontario
nursing homes every spring and
fall. Locally it caters to Queensway
Nursing Home, the Exeter Villa;
the Blue Water Rest Home and'Hu-
ronview.
"We're like a store on wheels,"
said sales clerk Ann Caldwell at
Geri's •visit to Queensway last
Month.
"We're someplace different every
day," added her co-worker, Shirley
Marr.

driving the van full of stock, or-
ganizing fashion shows, selling
c.iothcs and bobsting public re-
lations.
"They usually- walk around with
tape measures around their neck,"
said Queensway activity director
Carol ,Gascho.
In addition to men's wear and a
selection of women's clothes (from
size 2 to 52) including' accessories
and night wear, Gcri carries a line
of adaptive clothing! for those with
special needs.
Available are clothes that open at
front or back' with velcro closures.
The business was initiated by two
local nursing home nurses who rec-

ognized the need for such attire:
"When you're in q wheelchair,
the dresses tend to be a little short,"
explained Mildred Klopp, a
Queensway resident who finds it
difficult to get out shopping for the
longer, fuller styles Geri offers.
"Seniors are dressing younger all
the time," said Gascho.
"That generation that always
wore dresses (is) disappearing,"
agreed Marr, adding Geri now car-
ries fewer dresses.
Shoppers are often drawn from
the community when the Geri van
pulls up to nursing homes. The
business has been serving Queens-
way for nearly 15 years.
"I have seen their selection ex-
pand and also, the number of shop-
pers from the community has in-
creased," said Gascho.
Hilda . Payne, a Hensall senior,
has purchased Geri clothes for
nearly four years. She finds this
method of shopping easier and
comparable to store prices.
"I think it's a way of the future,"
said Gascho. "There are a lot of
seniors in their homes...who no
longer arc driving."
Besides shopping for the clothes,
Hensall resident Rita Van Wieren
has modeled for Geri's fashion
shows, which are held a month be-
fore the selling trips, often during
senior dining programs.
Queensway resident Dorothy
Taylor likes Geri's prices and se-
lection,
"I get a dress, a few things here,"
she said, her eyesscanning the
racks. "I like those pants right there
for summer. And they're quite rea-
sonable.".
"If you want something, it's very
rare that they don't have
it...They've even got bathing suits.
Some homes, have swim pro-
grams," said Gascho. "Plus, they
have boxes and boxes of under-
garments." As well as free altera-
tions for all its customers.
