Shorthanded senior girls soccer squad shines at West Lome tourney
WEST LORNE — A short-
handed South, Huron District High
School senior girls soccer team
managed to come up big at the
West Lorne tournament on Sat-
urday and walked away with a win
in three tries. • .
Senior coach Peter Heeney said
the team played without sub-
stitutions for. the three games. in
game one the seniors lost to Lon -
.don Lucas, but rebounded to heat
St. Thomas Arthur Voaden 3-0 in a
shootout. Heency said the girls
played "very well" in their 2-0
game•three loss to St. Mike's.
"They played with grit and de-
termination, and (he school should
be proud of them," Heency said.
On Thursday the senior girls
hosted Central Huron and won 1-0.
Arlene inlakhana scored •the South
Huron goal and Lise Geurts earned
the shutout between the Panther
pipes. The win puts South Huron at
.500 or 3-3 for the season.
The seniors lost 2-0 to host Clin-
ton St. Anne's on April 28. Heaney

Nabs lauded
Officially honored. The Exeter Nabisco AE Atoms hockey
team were honored by Exeter council Monday night for win-
ning the all -Ontario title last month. Here the team is seen

The junior girls continue their
league undefeated streak with two
wins last week. South Huron's Fal-
lon
allon Giles scored the lone goal in
her team's 1-0 home win over the
Central Huron Redmen on Thurs-
day.
On Tuesday at St. Anne's, the
juniors again won 1-0, this time on
a penalty kick goal by Niki Ver-
meulen after she was dumped on a
breakaway.
On Friday the junior girls trav-
elled to. Goderich for the annual
Glue and White invitational tourna-
ment- •.
South Huron heat Seaforth 2-0 in
their first game, both . goals scored
by Giles with a combined shutout
by Tammy McClure and Ange Cre-
gan. The juniors continued to dom-
inate play during game two versus
St. Mike's but the Panthers lost 1-0.
The Panthers won game three
over Listowel 2-1 after a shootout
on goals by Vermeulen and Kelli
Fulton. The game,endcd in a 1-1 tie
al the end of regulation., .
The juniors met Si. Marys in the
consolation final. Jessica Davies
tipped in a shot to tie the game up
at 1-1 to force another shootout.
Junior coach Becci Farquhar said
this time her girls came up short.
Fulton was named the tourney
MVP for her goal in the first shoot-
out and a.stellar performance in net
for the two final games.
Both girls teams travelled to
Wingham F.E. Madill yesterday af-
ter press and host Seaforth to-
morrow, the juniors kicking off at 2
p.m. with the seniors to follow.
Both .teams, travel to Goderich
May 12.
