Lucan bantams edge Mariposa for OMHA `DD' title
By Craig Bradford
TA Reporter
LUCAN — The Lucan 'DD'
Irish bantams squeezed by the Mar-
iposa 'htning to become the '0''/
98 0,. Minor Hockey Associa-
+:on ,,opions after a 3-1 win at
on Good Friday to take the
six -point series three games to two.
The fifth and final game was a
nail -biter for the large crowd on
hand to cheer on their team. Mar-
iposa scored first after both teams
had numerous chances including a
Lucan no -goal when the referee
judged the Mariposa net was
knocked off its moorings by a Mar-
iposa defender before the puck
crossed the goal -line. The Light-
ning were penalized for the infrac-
- tion `hut Lucan couldn't capitalize
with the extra man advantage.
Lucan tied it up with 3:15 re-
maining in the first when Dan
Pletch scored from the point with
the assist going to Matt Thompson.
• Adam Thomson scored the win-
ning goal -in the second period with
assists by. Thompson and Trevor
Smith. -
The teams played tight de-
fensively for much of the game and
both goaltenders, including Lucan's
Craig VanKasteren, came up with
many big saves despite goal mouth
scrambles and a few breakaways.
• Mariposa's coaches pulled a last
ditch- trick out of their hats by get-
ting the officials to measure captain
Thompson's stick blade with 10:22
remaining in the game. The blade
turned out to have an illegal curve
which netted Lucan a minor pen-
alty putting them two men down
hut they dug in and killed off both
penalties.
Mariposa thought they had it iced
up with 7:04 rem.unin in the
game, but VanKasteren kept the
puck from sliding behind him over
the line.
Mariposa called a time-out after
forcing a face-off in the Lucan end
with only 17 seconds left but
couldn't solve VanKasteren before
time ran out. -
Thomson's empty net glial sealed
the victory with five seconds left.
Lucan coach Dave Smith called
the series "tense."
"It was very well played by two
evenly matched teams," he said
Emotion boiled over into a
bench -clearing brawl alter game
four in-Lucan on April 5. resulting
in three players from each team sit-
ting out thc final game with suspen-
sions (Tyler Silver, Will Howitt
and Mike Pletch were Lucan's sus-
pended players). Lucan lost thc
game 4-3 but won game three at
home the day before
5-3. Lucan and Mar-
iposa also splitthe
first two games at
Little Britain (Mar- .
iposa's home base),
Mariposa taking
game one 3-2 on
March 28 and Lucan winning game
two on March 29 2-1 in overtime. _
Lucan made it to the final six -
point series by first taking two of
three games from ildenon, then
winning three straight over Wat-
ford, Plattsford and Mildmay.
Smith said good goaltending and
tight, hard checking was the way of
things throughout the series with
Vankasteren and "the Thom(p)son
boys" with standout performances.
Lucan's second line of Jonathon.
Smith. Ryan O'Shea and Alex
Michalis did solid checking duty on
Mariposa's best line and the de-
fensive duo of Ben Duskocy and
Darrell Parsons played well and of-
ten by hitting thc ice for every oth•
-
er shift.
Though they didn't get a lot of
ice time, Smith said Wes Revington
and Matt Rushton did a good
checking job when asked.
"It was just an all-round good
team effort by everyone." Smith
said. •
The team was treated to the cus-
tomary fire: -tick ride through the
village alter t game.
The hu,i fro."i the big win hadn't .
worn off when the T -A reached .
Smith at home on Monday.
"We're still basking in the glow
here." he said. "it's quite a thrill."
Smith said special thanks goes to
" the Lucan fans who
showed their support
at the games.
Eight players are
moving up to midget
next season and 10
will remain at ban-
tam. Smith said
thcrc-s a gond possibility Lut:an
Minor Hockey will put both a ban- ,
tam' and a midget team on the icc in
'98/99 there wasn't a Lucan, '
midget team this year despite the ,
fact they were the '96/97 OMHA
champs.
