Students to be chosen for Junior Snowbird Program
Take me out to the air expo. Grand Bend international Air Expo
organizers Nialf Straw. left, and TOM Lawson. have been over-
whelrhed with public interest in a new Junior Snowbird program.
At the June 3 show. area students will meet the Snowbirds,
help their maintenance crew and view the show from the con-
trol tower. Selection 'process details will be, decided today and
participants will be announced' mid-May.

CENTRALIA - For the first time in local aviation history, students
-will be chosen.to meet the Snowbirds and v'orl, xx Oh their maintenance
crew at the Grand Bend International Air Expo this summer.
Nine out of 11 Snowhird aircraft will perform at the June 3 Huron
Park Airport expo where Junior Snowhirds will attend a pre-flight meet-
ing, accompar» the maintenance crew to prepare the aircraft and then
watch the performance from the control tower.
•Due to an active public response. Junior.Snowhir•d program organiz•
-
ers upped the number of participating studcills last week from 11 to 22..
involving Grades 6 to OAC.in Huron. Perth. Lamhton andMiddlesex -.
County schools.

Junior Snowhirds. The selection process w ill he decided at a 'committee
meeting todax with participants to he announced hx Max 22.
• "You're a part of it as opposed to being an audience." said Straw Of -
the program. adding McCurdh's library was packed with people seeking
Snowhird autographs a dai.-heforc last year's sou. Arsim.ilar autograph
session will take place this year.
• "The. snowbirds in partictilar would rather per•fonn -'with small
groups." said air expo organizer Toni Lawson, wh-o came up with the
Junior Snowhird idea: "They've never been involved. with an air expo
and they're very excited about it."
."We could go really hie on this.': said -Straw who prefers to launch the
project on a smaller scale — at, least for now.
He. stressed all students should get a chance to he a Junior Snowhird.,
- he would rather avoid turning the opportunitx into a large-scale,comp<'
tition. yet at the same time wants -students to activeh participate in 'the
-selection process.
"We really want the kids to drive the show;" explained Lawson.
A school curriculum component .of the program is also heing dei el'
oped. McCurdy students will complete Hyperstudio repons..which• are_
essentiallx multi -media computer projects. A Wehsite is also on the wax.
Junior Snowbirds will have.'passports' stamped as -they experience vari-
ous asilects of the air expo. then later work on• school presentations. - -
The Snowhird program. was created in an effort to add an educational ,
component to the annual. air show. to differentiate it from London's
show.
This is the first year the shoo has boo -dubbed a career 'expo' with
an emphasis on aviation. The RCMP and OPP will also he on hand with
their programs and activities.
"This is the -sixth. air show and the fifth time we"ve had the. -
Snowbirds," said Lawson of the. free show that gathers support for area
food banks. -
The three-and-a-half.hour expo. normal1 slotted for the evening. will
take place in the morning.

- Last Vear's show attracted between 12.000 to 1'5.000 spectators and
has. grown -in size over. ,the years:- Two years ago. the -show Was put on
with .onlx eight- days notice due to a Snowhird cancellation. Still. the
postponed show drew 8.00( people.
