Women and Heart
symposium to be held at
Zurich Mennonite Church
ONTARIO - Over the past 40 years, the Heart
and Stroke Foundation has contributed to dra-
matic declines in the •rates at which Canadian
Women die from heart disease and stroke. Nev-
erthcless, heart disease and stroke , is still the
leading cause of death among women. In fact. it
accounts for 40 per cent of all Canadian female
deaths. •
Research has found that almost twice as many
women as men die following a heart attack or stroke.
The number one reason. for this is.that most women do not recognize
the signs of heart disease. Whereas men tend to suffer from the classic
symptom oI' crushing chest pain,' .the early signs for women tend to be
more vague and diffused. For women, the initial sign of heart disease
may he either chest pain or chest -discomfort. For men, the initial sign
tends to he a heart attack.
Not being aware of the warning signs of a heart attack - or assuming
that heart disease is a mans' disease - is something that we all should
he aware of. -
There are many risk factors that affect your chances of heart disease
or stroke. Some you can't change. such as' your age or your family's
history, but many you can control. -
These factors include diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol.
menopause. obesity, physical inactivity. smoking and stress.
How can women reduce their risk of heart disease and stroke?
First talk to your doctor. both about your risk profile and what you
can do about it. Second. know your risk factors and reduce as man of '
them as possible. You arc nit able to change your age or family histo=
ry, but you can become more. physically active. reduc.Ee tilt{ amount of
fat in your diet, quit smoking, or learn to manage the stress in your
life. Third. know the warning signs of heart attack and stroke and take
action immediately if they occur. 1
To Pinner infortn women on. heart disease and stroke, the Heart &
Stoke Foundation of Ontario • - Huron Chapter, will he holding a
"Women & Heart Health" symposium on April 22. at the Zurich Men-
nonite Church, between 6:30-9 p.m. Dr. Heather, Percival will start off
the evening. followed by a panel discussion 'with others who have
somehow been affected with either heart disease Or stroke.
A low fat cooking demonstration by Deb Campbell will end the eve-
ning, using recipes from Bonnie Stern's "More Heart Smart Cooking"
cookbook.
. Admission S5' $2. Please register with the Heart and Strbke-Founda
tion by calling 273-5212 or 1-888-287-7775.

Hormone replacement therapy for the treatment of mengpausat symp-
toms has many advantages 'not the least of which is slowing down the
progres§iorl- of osteoporosis. Spme women try natural remedies like
Dong Quai to help them through menopause. However, these products'
have no anti -osteoporosis effects. , 1
Proper thyroid hormone levels are important. Too much thyroid might re-
sult in weight loss, increased appetite, fast heart rate, shakiness, weak-
