Decadent desserts now available in Huron Park

HURON PARK - When thego-
ing gets tough. the tough start their
own business.
Offering at least 20 ice create fla-
vors, urging membership to her Icc
Creani Cake Club and armed with
various character pans, (including a
rocking horse, lion's face and dino-
saur) Lorraine Hillen• has opened
Decadent • icc Cream Desserts at
Centralia International Academy's
Middlesex Hall.
After being laid off in November,
the, Huron Park resident enrolled in
SEA (Self Employment Assistance)
through the Huron County Business
Centre; a program that requires a
viable business plan and supplies
applicants with a business advisor,
which Hillen claims is "a big help." -
Hillen's business plan was ap-
proved in March and she began the
business this week.
All her products contain ice
cream, which she makes on site
with a batch freezer.
When - asked how ice cream is
made, she simply replied: "That's a
secret."
Haien- specializes in custom -
.made hard ice-cream cakes and
pies.
"You can build your own cake,
really," she said.'

though she admits her business is
"somewhat seasonal," she adds
"consumers don't associate ice-
cream desserts with the weather."
She claims ice-cream- rolls that
can be sliced and coated with top-
pings such as chocolate pieces or
nuts arc popular with caterers.

serts for direct sale to consumers,
she has tapped into the wholesale
market for restaurants and grocery.

Hillen received first-hand train-
ing in the industry when her parents
operated an ice cream dairy in.

Hands-on workshop planned
for people with Alzheimer Disease
CLINTON - Ideas for providing
meaningful activities to persons
with Alzheimer Disease or related
dementias will be presented April
30th in Godcrich. Ms, Janecn
Mann, will present L.E.A.P. (Life
Enrichment for -Alzheimer Patients)
at Knox Presbyterian Church, in
Godcrich, Thursday. April 30th,
from 7 to 10 p.m.
This "hands c n" workshop is or-
ganized by the Alzheimer Society
of Huron County. Family caregiv-
ers,.volunteers, recreationists, RNs,
RNAs, homemakers,_ gerontology
workers and therapists are wel-
comed to attend. •
- The learning objectives are to
promote active -aging, to dispel the
"why bother" attitude, and to share
inexpensive activities that can he
used by caregivers in the home or
institutional setting.

The problem with
'no tax' days
EXETER - Some Exeter Busi-
ness Association members feel 'no
tax' days cause more problems than
revenue. •
They claim customers grow to
depend on the events and therefore
spend less money in stores just be-
fore and after the big sales. thus re-
sulting in a leveling out of sale dol-
lars rather than an overall increase.
At last week's EBA meeting, -

to break this dependency, adding
business people must evaluate their
