draws 222

annual race

VARNA - A canoc just past the
bridge suddenly tips and a girl's
screams spill into the air. A couple
of kayaks glide by. Both beginners
- and experts steered their watercraft.

_ ton was one of 25 volunteer or-
ganizers including 10 Brucefield
firefighters who were on hand for
safety reasons. Kirton stood along
the Hayfield River at one of three
check points to pass out slips that
would be traded for Poker hands at
the end of the roughly five -mile
trek from Tyndall's Bridge (at the
second concession of Stanley
Township) to the Varna Bridge. -
The weather conditions were
quite good, he said while watching
one team lug away their defunct ca-
noe after it tipped nearby. Although
calm, warm weather is considered

BRYANSTON - The Bryanston
F endship Club met on Wednesday
April 1 with 32 members and four
guests present. A delicious pot luck
dinner was enjoyed by all at noon.
Carmen Hodgins club member
and long time cheese maker at De-
vizes Cheese Factory was pleasant-
ly surprised with a specially deco-
rated cake in honour of his 90th
birthday, (April 20).
Cairn is in failing healthand his
wife Betty thanked the committee
and everyone for their thoughtful-
ness. A shower of cards were also
presented to him.
President Alex Jeffrey opened the
meeting with a poem and a humor-
ous reading which was. followed by
singing 0 Canada. Happy birthday
was sung to Elgin Rintoul.
A moment of silence was ob-
served in memory of Percy Hod-
gins who passed away March 31.
The minutes and treasurers re-
ports were given. It was decided to
make a donation to the Canadian
Cancer Society and to the Salvation
Army.
Greta Gibson, Mona Maybury,
Dor9thy Darling and Helen Banting
will be in charge of the May meet-
ing.
Audrey, McRoberts opened thc
program- with a poem -'Springs
Messengers' followed by the intro-
duction of our guests by Edith Ea-
ton. Lois Hodgins -of West McGil-
livray and- Shirley Barton of St.
Marys entertained with several mu-
sical selections Hodgins on violin
accompanied by Barton on the pia-
no. Hodgins also brought along a
sample of her many antiques to
share with us which proved inter-
esting. They were thanked by Eaton
after which McRoberts gave an
Easter reading which was followed
by a short skit 'Bells' by McRo-
berts and Eaton.

registering. In total, 108 watercraft
were registered for the trip that
takes the average person three to
four hours to complete.
"I think this is close to one of the
hest years." said Kirton, adding that
participation is near last year'}

The best turnout was in 1994 with
128 participants. The rally has only
been postponed twice due to high
water levels and Kirton recalls one
wintery start.
"I remember one year there was
an inch of snow on the ground in
the morning," he said.
Kirton described this year's rally
as "very successful."
Rob Rau,' of Stanley Township,
.won first prize of $75. Pat•Hagitt, of
Varna, won second prize of $50 and
Clinton resident Jeff Ocsch took
home the $25 third prize. Jason
Clarke, of Hensall, won thc canoe
draw.
Exeter Villa enjoy March entertainment
EXETER - Spring has arrived
at the Exeter Villa with residents
feeling better with the Flu season
over. We look forward to a
healthy April. -
There are many people to thank
for sharing their time and talents
with the residents over thc past
month. '
Many thanks to the Notes of
Yesteryear. for always providing
the residents with a fun night of
musical entertainment.
A special thanks to the •hard
working Lioness who always put
on an excellent program for the
residents.
In March the residents enjoyed
a St. Patrick's Green Bingo. All
the prizes were. themed around
Si. Patrick's and green. As well
in March the residents enjoyed
many evenings of excellent enter-
• tainment and dancing fun with
Marlene and - Eric, Satchels Or-'
chestra, Granton Rythumarics,
Kountry Korners, and Max Du=
charme and the Townlincrs.
- :1'he Hurondale Womens Insti-
tute were in to visit the Villa in
March and brought with them
music and dancing.
"Marching' into spring was full
of celebrations: St. David's Day
was celebrated with an afternoon
tca and St. Patrick's Day was the
Top O'the Month with a week of
celebrations.
An Irish coffee one afternoon,
Irish trivia, and a St. Patty's Day
party with green ice cream cones.
With all the beautiful warm
weather thc residents enjoyed a
delightful treat at thc Ice Cream
Parlour.
Volunteer week - April 19-25
Volunteer luncheon will he
held on April 22 at 12 noon.
