April Is Cancer month. It's a good time to highlight
one of the most addictive habits known and a proven
cause of cancer:•smoking.
In Canada, every. second smoker dies from smoking.
Smoking causes 35 per cent of cancer, 77 per cent
of chronic lung disease'and 16 per cent of coronary
artery disease. Tobacco addiction causes more deaths than AIDS, acci-
dents and drugs combined. And it costs our healthcare system billions.
We see -evidence of nicotine's addictive quality when fewer than 10 per
cent of smokers can.go one day without a cigarette. AISo, symptoms of
tobacco withdrawal are reliably reversed by -nicotine. Also, studies with
experienced drug Users show that nicotine given intravenously is as sat-
isfying as injectable morphine. - -
There are many products and programs designed to help smokers stop
their addiction. They all work to some degree but the chances of suc-
cess are increased immensely if a person is highly' motivated to quit. For
motivation, re -read the second comment in this column.
Researchers are learning more and more about cancer as the years
progress. Research takes money. When the Cancer Society volunteer
canvasser comes calling on you, please give generously.
