Winners were: Ladies high Mabel Fraser; Ladies low Doreen Lightfoot; Ladies lone hands a tie between Isobel Becker and Ethel Desjardine; Mens high Jack Gale; Mens low Jim Pickering; Mens most lone hands Jan Legerwerf. Happy birthday wishes this month to Annie Zielman and Lorne Fenner. Harold and Lucille Vincent arrived home in mid-March after spending the winter months in Florida. While there they visited with their daughter Lori and son-in-law Kevin Brown. Women in this area attended the Easter Ecumenical Tuesday night April 7 at St. John's Anglican Church. Guest speaker was Michelle Hansen, director of the Women's Shelter at Goderich. Ken and Marg Baker were Sunday visitors with Mark and Vicky Lawson, and daughters Rachael and Amanda of St. Marys. April is cancer month. Children at Grand Bend United Church hand- ed out daffodils to everyone as they left church last Sunday. Hugh and Annie Morenz visited recently with Mary and Art Finlayson at Seaforth, also with the Coleman family of Kippen, Bill, Norma, John, Carol and Brandon. Get well wishes to Ruth Sheppard who is presently in hospital. Jason Clark wins canoe at annual rally By Joan Belerltng Varna correspondent VARNA - A Good Friday church service will be held in Goshen at 10:30 a.m. Readers are needed to take part in the service.- There will be a practice for this service at 9:15 a.m. that morning. Contact Tracy Crick as soon as possible if you are interested. April 12 will be the Easter celebration in Varna. There will he a congregational meeting of the Varna Church fol- lowing the church service on April 12. This isa very important meet- ing so plan to attend. A reminder of the Lenten Study on Wednesday mornings at 9:30 in the Varna Church. Everyone is wel- come. The Food Grains Growing Project is moving along well. Planting is not far away. Funds are needed soon for seed, fertilizer, weed control , etc. Donations will still he accepted by the church trea- surer. The Five Alive Committee pre- sents Family, Friendship and Fun on April 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the Brucefield Church. This program will feature "The Friendship Band" starring Paul Consitt. The Celtic Band "Torinn" from Goderich will he entertaining as well as the guest speaker Jane Hoy from Rural Response for Healthy Children. The offering will go to the Flowers of Hope campaign of Community Living for South Huron. The Varna United Church annual pork -barbecue at the Stanley Township Hall is planned for June 17. The Stan Lee Seniors will meet April 8 at the Shamrock Genetics Inc. boardroom at Varna.,A presen- Youth speakoff this Friday in Clinton EXETER - About 35 people enjoyed a potluck supper before the ,recent meeting of the Pride of Huron Rebekah Lodge. DDP Bernice Ford made her official visit. She visits Clinton on April, 6; and Brussels on April 14. April 15 is a banquet.at' Exeter United Church when the - Assembly Warden will visit the Exeter Lodge. The 13th annual canoe rally sponsored by the Stanley Township Rec Committee held on Sunday was very successful with 108 canoes and 222 participants. Poker hands were won by Rob Rau (first prize), Pat Haggitt (second prize) and Jeff Oesch (third prize). Jason Clark from Hensall was the lucky winner of the canoe, paddles and life j4ickets. The Varna Orange Lodge reports another successful Heart and Stroke Canvas in the Varna and Central Stanley area. This year $1,325.00 was collect- ed and marks 16 years that the Lodge had organized the local can- vas. Those who worked on the campaign included Floyd McAsh, Ruby LaFaive, Jack Eckel, Howard Armstrong, Loren Love, Mona Stephenson, Doug McAsh, Bill Dowson, Allan Hayter, Charles Reid and Ivan McClymont. On April 14 at 8:30 p.m. there will be an open crokinole fun night in the basement of Varna United Church. Lunch will he provided and everyone is welcome. Congratulations to Mona and Ralph Stephenson and d Jack and Eleanor Coleman on the birth of their new grandson born to,JDale and Sandra on March 29. Varna U.C.W. met last Thursday evening. President Deb Rathwell opened with a spring poem. Thank.you notes were read from Town and Country Support Services, and from Rod and Lori Merner and girls. An invitation was extended from the Friendship Circle of Hensall to meet with them on April 4. The speaker will be Betty Simpson of Glencoe. On April 14 Kippen is holding their Thankoffering with Barb Hodgins, who will speak on "A Thankful Heart". The April Event will he held at the Northstreet United Church in Goderich. The cabins at Camp Menesetung will be opening the week of April 27 to May 2. A wish list for Car1)p Menesetung will be posted and a box left at the church. Some things needed are -balloons, fabric dye, plastic ice crcam pails, construction ' paper, zip lock baggies, sponges, embroidery floss, rubber gloves, dried silk or plastic flowers, lace and ribbon, clothes pins, paper clips, elastics, paint brushes and glue sticks. Flannelette sheets, blankets, sleeping bags and small floor mats are also needed as well as tools. - The group was reminded to keep saving Campbell soup labels. There will be a bridal shower for Faye Anne Love on May 8 at the Complex at 8 p.m. Mary Ostrom, Janet Webster and Shirley Hill were in charge of the program. Hot cross buns were served for lunch.
