Webbers three generations deep in curling
The Exeterarea family's curling history goes back over 40 years
By Craig Bradford
T -A Reporter
EXETER — The :Webbers have
been itching -to be out on the curl-
ing rink ice for three generations.
It all . started with Lee Webber
way back in .158 when curlers
used the old arena. That was before
the Exeter Curling Club built its
current facility•in 1960.
"I'm one of the a old birds here,
Lce, 18, said.
His wife of 56 years, Helen,
picked up the broom in 1963. She
insists she didn't take up the sport
to feel closer. to her mate: -
"I started because l wanted to,"
she said.
Lcc and Helen's son Doug .can
remember hanging around the curl-
ing club as a youngster and he too
picked up the sport in high school
though he fooled around with rocks
.at a- much younger age. He prac-
ticed throwing rocks after the club
championship, which is held on the
last day of the season, when- it
didn't matter if he ruined the ice.
Lcc. Helen and Doug all have-
their
avetheir fond memories and highlights.
A rink Lce skipped won the re-
gional Massy Ferguson Curlarama
for farmers in'63.hosted by the Ex-
eter Club but lost out on a trip out
west for the -national bonspiel by
one stone at the Ontario final:
Doug's best loved memories arc a
couple Huron -Perth schoolboys ti-
tles.
But Doug's daughter (and Lee
and Helen's granddaughter) Bri-
anne, 15, has them beat in her two
short years out on the rink. As part
of Jenn Mercer's South Huron Dis
trict High School rink, Brianne
competed in Midland in the OF -
SAA finals that wrapped up on the
weekend (see related story).
Brianne, the lead of the rink,
along with Mercer, vice Laura Mill-
er, second Melanie Urquhart and
spare Marilou Hern won the WOS-
SA title in Tillsonburg earlier this
ionth, the _first ever WOSSA title
for Exeter curling.
"This kid has gone farther in two
years of •curling than this entire
family:has," Doug said proudly.
She's already experienced pro-
vincial -level competition after her
rink played in the Gore Mutual In-
surance -Schoolgirl' provincials in
Gananoque, also earlier this month.
Brianne did especially well and
was named to the tournament's first
all-star team.
"I love it, it's fun," an under the.
weather Brianne said about curling.
The family that curls together...The Webber family has three
generations of curlers at the Exeter Curling Club. Pictured are
Doug Webber, his dad Lee, mom , Helen and daughter Bri-
anne.
She was still recovering from mono
and hoped to he 100• per cent for
OFSAA.
Though curling . is a simple
enough sport to pick up, it's an. in-
tricate one that can take a lifetime
to master.
"It's frustrating when you start,"
Brianne said.
But her early success has Brianne
thinking that only the sky's the lim-
it: her goal is to some-
day play in the Ca-
nadian Tournament of
Hearts (the national
championship) and
the Olympics.
"I knowit's a big
goal, even if it's only
to watch," she said.
"My coach (Bill Urquhart) wants
us to get to the junior nationals be-
fore we get out of high school."
Lee and Doug curled together
competitively for more than 10
years, but they seldom play togeth-
er today. In fact, Lee hasn't curled

December he's still recovering
from.. .
"It's on my mind for next sea-
son," Lee said with a .smile when
asked if and when he'll he hack.
A favorite story of _Lee's shows
how much he loves to curl. Several
years ago before he and Helen re-
tired from farming. Lce was faced
with missing a bonspiel due to had
winter , weather.
While the roads were
'impassable •tor .auto-
mobiles, Lee made it
to the club on his
• tractor.
While there's a
.whole lot of Webbers
at the rink, there's. an-

anne'. brother. -Brian, 9, is starting
to throw rocks and is looking for-
ward to playing on .a team in • a .

South Huron girls o
2-2 at OFSAA curling
MIDLAND — The South Huron girls curling rink missed the
quarter -final cut at the OFSAA final tournament at Midland. and
Pcnetanquishene curling clubs by just one rock.
The team made up of skip Jenn Mercer, vice Laura Miller, second
Melanie Urquhart, lead Brianne Webber and spare Marilou Hern
won their first two games over Timmins and Midland 9.7 and 8-5
respectively. They then lost their next two matches 7.6 -and 4-3 to
Peterborough Adam Scott and Scarborough Wilfred Laurier re-
spectively.
South Huron finished with a record of 2-2. Teams with records of
3-1 advanced to the quarter -finals.
Notable moments during thetournament for South Huron include
fighting back to make' it close after being down 6-0 to Adam Scott
after four ends and Urquhart stepping into the skip role and. Hern
into the lead in the Laurier game after Mercer was too sick to con-
tinue.
Coaches Bill Urquhart and Janice Shore said they as well as every-
one else at the Exeter Curling Club are "very proud" about their
team's performance over the past five months.
