..Reccutly our sons' elementary school report cards
cants hciiu. As a parent..thc first thing 1. took for
front the report card is that the' teacher has come to
know -my child: I mean really conte to know hint. ---
Has the teacher discovered what makes him "tick"?..
Do they recognize him Iiw being the unique individ-
ual he is? Once I know the answer to that, i can go
on. Is -my child making progress? Can•he do what is
expected of a student.:u that grade level' I don't

against the expectations. Arc.things unfolding,at

what can I do as a parent to help•' •
Our elementary school colleagues are_ working hard to make a sue -
cess of this new provincial report card in' meeting parents needs. The
necessity to re-examine our secondary suhobl reporting methods
scents timely. • '
We have a duty in schools to assess student -performance of learn-
ing often and fairly and pertitrntancc is the right word. Students must
demonstrate what it is they now know, can do and believe as a result
of the learning. They must produce. The knowledge. skills and .11ti-
, • tudes, of students ean;be. and should he. -measured in many ways: and
on many occasions. How, then, do we take that wealth of assessment
information and convert it to a useful report card and li)rnat? .
The°dilemma lies in the design. As a result many. many high
schools -in Ontario havcresortcd to a computerized print out of marks
With standardizcd•commcnts. At South Huron. we think the tune has
come•to do-bettcr.
A report card team, representing parents, teachers, and students
- will be meeting with me -during the next •few months to redesign our
report card -format for use beginning in September. Meanwhile., we
will'send home the mid-term report cards on Wednesday. April 15
followed by Patent -'leacher interViews-on Tuesday. April 21. e.
• As well as -a repoyrt card'review. the schools Code of Rehm iour is
also being re-examined and policies for the OAC and Grade 9 pro-
. grammes are being written. These are just some of the initiatix es
underway at South Huron this spripg. At this time of year, secondary
school principals are all busy working.on starling, timetabling and
, the general organizational issues lin' the next school year. 'Mere has
been a tremendous amount of restructuring and rationalising and
downsizing going on in all sectors of our society. And. of course; , •
education is no difl:erent. Large enterprises hays had to become more
agile. ntrircAlexible. So. too, education must face the same sort of
challenges. We've built on our strengths, extended our creative' • ,
approaches. made new, partnerships. adopted a moreentrepreneurial
culture and rethought our structures and hierarchies. But, no matter
how much we have already done to restructure. redesign aiid reinvent
school. each political party that onnes into power would have • .

and try to got them to work. methinks the poet T.S.'Eliot was right.

UNIQUE EXTERIOR ENHANCES COMPACT DESiON
The most precise description for the style of this home would be 'rural heritage'..A main
gable roof shows a double upper floor feature gable and a dominant covered entry
verandah feature gable. An attractive balance is achieved by the contrasting small upper
floor mass and the high mass lower floor base. -
An 11' 0" ceiling height in the living room adds a stylish touch as well as creating a more
spacious atmosphere. The cook in the family will enjoy a gourmet style kitchen complete
with a pantry and a work island. A large family room, open to the nook and kitchen,
provides a comfortable area for casual gatherings.
Upstairs, the front bedroom boasts theaddition of a boxed out window seat, as well as a
large closet and desk area. A deluxe master bedroom features a walk-in closet and a four
piece ensuite with a soaker tub.
An unfinished basement awaits your own creative touch.
