Farm coalition receives funding
The grant will be used to compile water quality data
.HURON COUNTY - The .Huron Environ -
"mental Farm Coalition (HEFC) has received
$15,000 from the' National Soil' and Water
Conservation Program' for a pilot project to
study historic water quality records.
This is funded by Agriculture and Agrifoexl
Canada through the Ontario Adaptation Coun-
cil. In addition, local organizations are fi-
nancing the project with $5,000 cash • and
$5,000 in-kind contributions. ' •
"Water quality is a major concern of res-
idents and visitors to Huron ..
County," said Evert_ Ridder of the Coalition.
"Concerns- focus on potability of water in
wells and' surface .water, especially the suit-
ability- of surface waters in the county •:and
Lake Huron for swimming." •
Using data collected by the Maitland Valley
and Ausahle Bayfield Conservation Author-
ities, the•Huron.County Health Unit and other
organizations, a data base of measured historic
concentrations for several parameters, in-
cluding bacteria and nutrient loading will be
Created. .
"We will locate the most important conduits
for migration of bacteria and nutrients and
compare levels with increases and decreases
of livestock production in Huron County as
. well as population increases and changes in
landuse," Ridder explained.
Professor Douglas Joy of the University. of
Guelph will be in charge of the project in-
cluding hiring and supervising a graduate stu-
dent to collect the data.
Once the data is compiled, it will be used as
an education tool for farmers, various levels of
government and the general public.
"Our goal is ,to educate livestock and cash
crop producers, the public,
. municipal and other governments' with the
historical and current state of .
surface water quality. Only by all of us tak-
ing ownership of the pollution
of surface water can we begin to come to a
common practical solution agreed to by all,"
Ridder said. .
Member organizations are .encouraged to
forward ideas and questions about this project
to the project committee..
'The Huron Environmental Farm Coalition
