She's no Coward when it comes to painting

EXETER - Gwen Coward proves it's never too late to
become artful.
Coward. 59 .and grandmother of four. started painting
seven years ago after seeing another .Exeter artist's work. A
•tour of TimrClark's home and .his paintings sold her on
becoming an artist. CoWard said.
'Her chosen medium is water color and her style echoes
that of Clark's though she. uses more vibrant colors. •Her
paintings arc studies in colors -and lines. though the focus
isn't .on detail hueon impression. Subjects range from 11ow-
-crs to Iandscapes"'io old barns to front doors of homes to a
mennonite and his huggyheading off over the horizon..
"Apparently 1 started in Clic hardest_ medium.- Coward said
-in her studio. a converted --spare bedroom in her Exeter
'hone, "1 guess once you master the :hardest one the others
will be easier:"
Water color is -considered harder because you can't paint
•(,\ cr.mi takes like you can with oils or acrylics.

me is what water color is. not
Coward is :now dabbling in other mediums including
-acrylic floorclothes. decorative -mats that can brighten that
spot in front Of the kitchen sink or welcome visitors at the
front door.
She gets- her inspiration from a myriad of sources. from
pictures in magazines. things•s-.:sen while driving in the
country -side. just about anyt.nng could strike. CoWard's
,'ancv and show up -in a painting. An interesting crooked tree
seen along Hwy. -4 turns .up in a pond. side painting.- for
instance.
Hcr latest- picce.dcpicts a girl's pair of skates in the snow
and will he one of man artworks -from local artists featured
in the Ausahle-Bayfield Conservation Fountlatrcm–and
Exeter Lions Club's anntiat-Conservation Dinner and
Auction on April 16. The feature.artist who will exhibit-sey-
OAl of -their paintings will he Exeter's Flora Doerr.
'Coward's next project will he a sandy Keach -which Won't
he for sale — it'll replace the skate painting atop Coward's
mantle. , :Coward's paintings run from S35; for a small unmarred
5"X7" ori} inal ib o'.er S125 for an. unmatted 16"X24" origi-
nal. the largest size work`Coward has painted so.far.
• Coward .founded Artistic Touch. a local art group that
meets at South -Huron District High School the first and third
Thursday of each. month from. 7 p.m. -10 p.m. The group
offers workshops and painting classes and coward" hopes to
