EXETER - l( has been said that
"a picture is worth a thousand
words." If this is indeed the case,
then one might say,that..volumes
have heen spoken in the ongoing
debate regarding the pictures com-
prising the .Exeter Historical
Portrait Collection.
For those unfamiliar with the
.background of this unique `collec-
.tif►n, .the Exeter and District
Heritage Foundation would like to
take this opportunity to share with
you the origins of this ensemble. In-
tht cart1990s, our organiiauon
was approached by Harry and Tom
Burke with their proposal to pro-
duce portraits depicting some of
1yetcr's earlyfounding fathers:
The Heritage Foundation was
asked for its financial support to
pay for the mounting and framing
of the portraits. In addition to the
pictorai display, relevant historical
data to.ac: ompany the portraits was
. to be included as well. It •was very
apparent th.it thc.Burke family
enjoyed 1=.yctcrand its historical
past and the portrait collection

The Heritage Foundation spon-
sored an open house to which the
public was my tied and at that time
the Burkcs wcrc acknowledged for
their many hours of work and inspi-

When ownership of the Olde
Town Hall reverted hack to
Council's control. and extensive
renovations planned. the portraits
were removed, carefully stored.
awaiting a suitable place where
they Could he effectively displayed.
This decision was to be left up to
the discretion of couneil. Upon
completion of the .renovations 10
the council chambers. it was appar-
ent -that available wall, space was
lessened and there was not ade-
quate space to display the entire
collection And so. we found our-
selves faced with a dilemma --what
to do with the portrait collection'
In recent months a petition has,
:been circulated within the commu-

seem to indicate there is concern
about he' fate of the collection. It
