Lucan budget talks kick off March 31
Topping the agenda will be how to find the savings necessary to meet pro-
vincial downloading while preserving services and keeping taxes in check

during a special council meeting on March 31.
- Council derided on starting budget deliberations
at a special meeting after an In -camera session at
last week's meeting. Reeve Robert. Benner said staff
arc to conic up with two budget scenarios to :re-
spond to provincial downloading.: one featuring a
$60.00(1 cut Irotit Iasi year's budget and the second

attending the meeting must leave the council cham-

cuss personnel. property. contra: r and legal matters
under the Municipal Act.
The first step of the budget process was com-
pleted earlier at the meeting when treasurer Ruth
Frost released the preliminary '97 year end report.
The village has a S 15.900 surplus but the'numhers

Renner noted the village spent 5,13.482 on gar-
bage pickup and $ 11.466 on tipping' fees in '97 but

tion costs have also gone down. Benner said council

health card when attending at a hos-

a patient presents their health card:"
The Ministry of Health has creat-
ed a Health Card Validation Project
which is a I-800 line that enables
health care providers to determine
the status ol health card numbers
and version axle at the point of ser-
vice. This project also assists health
care pro% niers with decisions re-
garding eligibility. .erification of
patient data. and protests against .
health care fraud. .
The Health Card Validation Pro-
ject asissts'doctors, who arc regis-
tered with the program. to confine
that the patient has a valid ()HIP
number and they will receive health
scrvIccs: •

Council discussed the• matter- at Iasi week's electing: The province
turned .over 1(34 km of roads' it once looked after to the county earlier
this year and, in turn. the county will download'(s 7 Lin of roads to its
member municipalities.
Public works superintendent Doug Johnston Said assuming the upkeep
of Alice St won't pose much of a problem and tial the county has
promised to hnng the roads up 10 standard.
The count can't make snap decisions on which roads it doesn't wane
— traffic counts are the main criteria that =decide which roads can go to
lower tier municipalities. Council has a month to submit input to the
county on the road downloading. • . •

Johnston said his village pickup is about ready to he retired atter it re-
cently blew a gasket. He. would like to -lease a truck till after a_possthlc
amalgamation but agreed -with council's decision to snake do: with the
old truck till after the '98 budget is done in nod -\1a\ -
Johnston i ury have to rent a truck in the meantime it the old one final-
ly dies. He will contact Niven Motors to find out what lease and rental
deals i1 has to offer. . .
