Chiefs ousted from OMHA playdowns in first round
By Craig Bradford
T -A Reporter
EXETER - it's all over hitt
the cryin' for the Exeter Juvenile
Chiefs hockey team after they losi
two of three games las' week to
New Hamburg to end their quest
.to repeat as Ontario Minor Hock-
ey Association champions.
The Chiefs -lust game five of
their hest -of -five series to host
New Hamhurg 2-.1 on Sunday. Ex-
eter got on the hoard first with
1:13 kit in the first period when
Greg Hendrick cons'crlcd a Iced
from. Paul Knight. The Chielz held
onto the -slight lead Till 12:26 ,of
the third when New Hamhurg got
:a powerplay marker by Exeter
goaltender Dennis Roth. New
Hamhurg got the game and series
winning goal with 7:01 left in the
gale.
At home on .Saturday. the
Chiefs stayed alive with it 1-0 win.
Chris Rcahurn scored midway
through the second period on a
pass from Marty dciruyn.
The Chiefs lost game three 'at New Ham-
burg 5-3 last week. dcBruyn scored two for
Exctcr. one in the second and the other in the
third period. and Brian Richardson scored an
unassisted goal with 6:24 Icft in the game to
bring Exeter to within one of Ncw Hamhurg.
Thc hosts put the game on. ice with an empty
net goal with 13 seconds left.
Chiefs G.M. John Rasenhcrg said his team
played solid defensively and in goal all season
but just couldn't score consistently. He credit-
ed goaltender Dennis Roth for keeping the
Chiefs in thc hunt in games four and five:
Assistant coach Mike Soldan said the
coaching staff arc pleased with their team's ef-
fort this season despite an early exit from the
OMHA playdowns.
"We played an excellent series and only
lost by one goal," he 'said. "Ncw Hamburg was
Don't go there. Exeter's Byron Ellerington, left, tries his best to change directions to keep a
New Hamburg player from getting around him during theirfirit round Juvenile OMHA playoff
game at South Huron Rec Centre on Saturday. Exeter won the game 1-0, but lost the series
in five games after losing in New Hamburg on Sunday.
the league's hest team. We gave them every-
thing they could handle."
Thc- Chiefs finish thc season with the
Southern Counties league final tournament in
Aylmer this weekend. Rasenberg said the em-
phasis at the tourney won't just be on winning
but on having fun.
Soldan said he and head coach Kevin
McArter have already begun planning for next
season, starting during the drive home from
the game five loss. The entire coaching staff is
expected to be back and thc Chiefs will prob-
ably return to 'CC' play instead of remaining
in 'B'.
The move will mean the Chiefs will lose
players that hail from outside the Exeter area
including Roth who's from Tavistock and Jer-
emy Stewart, Paul Knight and Matt Froud who
arc all from St. Marys.
Soldan said the coaching staff will look at
midget -age players from local minor hockey
associations in Exeter. Zurich and Stephen
Township..
Soldan wanted to cap the '97/98 season by
thanking his G.M. •-
"John (Rascnherg) has been excellent at
promoting juvenile hockey over his four years
as the juvenile kingpin here," he said. "i think
-he's been a real credit to minor hockey around
here. He's a man who knows all the rules and
regulations. if you have a problem, he can get
you the answers."
Soldan also saluted the return of juvenile
hockey to respectability.
"Juvenile hockey has cleaned up its act," he
said. "Juvenile hockey is as precise as Jr. D
hockey but not quite the same quality."
i-lte said juvenile gives players older than
midget=age but not quite good enough for Jr.
D a chance to play competitive hockey.
