Campbell named Morenz rookie of year
• EXETER - - Jr. D Hawks centre
Jeff Campbell has been seen can-
ing around the newest and biggest
addition to his mantle — the Mo -
rent Division '97/98 rookie of the
year trophy. '
Campbell. 16, was given the
honor at the recent Jr. D hanquet.
The Hensall-native also plays
with the Exeter Minor Hockey
midgets and hopes to make a.Jr. B
•team .next scast:in, perhaps in
Stratford or St. Thomas.
Being named rookie of thc year
should holster Campbell's 18th
round ranking in thc OHL's cen-
tral scouting list for the June 6
draft. •
.Hawks coach/G.M. Rey-
ington had nothing but praise for

lie has a really high skill level
in general." Revington said. "He
docs • all the little things well —
skalc. pass. shoot. There's not a
I6 -year-old forward in the league'
that's better."
One knock on Campbell is. he's
a small forward at 5'9" and 150 lbs. in a junior
hockey climate that says the bigger the better.. De-
spite his lack of stature•and hulk..Camphell scored •
25 goals and 10 assists this season and "has a really
good presence on the ice."
Campbell said his grcatca skills. are anticipating
the play and knowing his positions. He- likes the -.
competitiveness of hockey and hopes to land a U.S.
scholarship and study "some-
thing in sports.husincss or broad-
casting" or play Jr. A.
•Two Lucan_ Irish players also
received kudos at the banquet..
Goaltendcr Mike Boyce and dc-
fenceman Jeremy, Lamhourn
were named to the Morenz Divi-
sion all-star team.

Irish co -coach Bill Bourne said both Boyce and
. Williams -have the stuff to move up to Jr. B' next
season.
Like Campbell, the only disadvantage the two
.hackstops have is their size: Boyce is around 5'9"
and 155 Ins. ,and -Williams' is_ an inch taller: at about
the same weight.
"With a little more muscle on
then -they could handle the puck

Bourne said.

Osborne Central students are rocking
By Craig Bradford
T -A Reporter
EXETER — While teachers usually want. their
students to curl up with a classic hook. Ushcirnc
Central School Gr. 6-11 students are encouraged to
curl in a different. more active way.
Usborne Central students have spent an afternoon
a week over the past three weeks learning to curl at
the Exeter Curling Club. Gr. 6-7 homeroom teacher
Michelle Bcaulac. one of the program organizers,
said the experience has heen a first for almost all of
the students.
The curling coincides with the Winter Olympics
unit the students have. heen studying and the chil-
dren arc even more excited about learning to curl
due to the Canadian women's team gold medal and
men's team sitver•rnedal performances in Nagano.
Japan.
"We are trying to promote life-long • sports and
this is part of that." Bcaulac said im the ice last
week.
The students have also gone on a field trip to Tal-
isman Resort in Kimberly for some skiing lessons
as part Of then studies. Beaulac said.
Parent/curliri_, club member Barry Miller helped
coach the kid\ and said the program has heen pop-
ular over its last kw years. adding this year's pro-
gram had ideal timing due to the Winter Olympics.
'=The kids scent to enjoy it."•hc said.
The most difficult aspect ofthc game for the kids
is which _way they should turn the handle on the
rock to•achievrthe shots they want. -Miller said. •
."But we're not Worrying about that too much." he
saitt with a smile. "As long as they enjoy thein -
selves and realize curling is a life-
long sport.",
Beaulac said special. thanks_
should go to the South Huron Dis-
' trict _ High School. curling team
.members who gave of thcir'timc to
instruct younger students.
Ushornc students have also
learned some communication tech-
nology with the Olympic - unit:
they have been video conferencing
with Zurich Public School stu-
dents to share - their research on the
Olympic events, Bcaulac said.
By the smile on his reddened
face, you could tell Osborne Cen-
tral student Wilfred Veldman was
.enjoyinghimself out on the rink.
"Maybe." he said when asked if
he plans on pursuing the sport..
"Throwing the rocks is fun. You
get to slide and all that."
He said the most difficult thing
ahout curling is trying to get your -
rock into the ring. •
Listen to, your elders. Par-'
ent/curling club member Bar-
ry Miller, left, gives some
sage advice to Usborne Cen-
tral student Wilfred Veldman
at the Exeter Curling Club
