WI discuss effects of restructuring
The group examined the pros and
cons of amalgamating three townships
and Mitchell into the new West Perth.
Roberta Tempkmen
Staffa correspondent
STAFFA - The Staffa Women's Institute met for
their Citizenship and Legislation meeting on Fehruary
25 at 1:30 p.m. at the home of Marjorie Drake.
President Kay Smalc presided for the meeting open-
ing with the- Institute Ode and Mary Stewart Collect.
Assistant secretary Claudette Elliott read the minutes
of the previous meeting.
Nine members and one visitor -answered the roll call
by giving their thoughts on .what we are going •to miss
after the restructuring.
Roberta 'Templeman presided for the topic, when all
members participated in the discussion concerning the
restructuring of the three townships and the town of
Mitchell. into what is now West Perth.
As a group. they felt they were going to miss the
closeness they, had with the people in what was Hibbert
Township and they wondered if bigger was always bet-
ter.
They also voiced their conecrn, over Staffa hall.
More discussion followed over cake, cookies and
coffee served by Esther Smalc and Marjorie Drake.
The group thought the following poem said it all:
The men were -quite cocky, they stood in the sun.
Let's go to thc city. stock up and -have fun.
We'll buy by the case, all under one roof,
And save lots of money, of that we have proof,
So just that they did, for many a year,
And Of the results, never did theyfear,
Until one fine day they perchance met again,
Standing uptown, just out of the. rain,
What's happened here, cried one in dismay.
Their faces were ashen, they had much to say,
The one scratched his head, the other said loudly.
There's no milk, no coffee.. and where's the crowd?
'My wife is real sick and right off her feet,
1 came for some drugs. some milk and some meat.
The hospital's closed, the grocery store too.
What in the world are we going to do?
My furnace is shot and plumbing all broken,
The other chap gasped. I thought'he was choking,
My car is a wreck, my tires arc low.
I need nails and !umber, there's no place to go..
His friend hung his head, right down to his chest.
It's our fault he muttered, on our heads it rests,
We passed this town by for the glimmer of lights,
Bought stuff by the carload and took in the sights
The city is hustling and bursting with pride
And all of our towns have just up and died
The houses are empty. the hanks repossessed
i'll tell you my friends. we arc•in for a test.
We should have been smarter and wiser, they said
"t'he town would he hustling. not nearly so dead
tt's,nevcr too late, 1 heard one.of them say
Through the folly of many. they all had to pay
They parted at last, with the wind turning cold
And muttered "Buy locally"
We should have been told.
Casual chic...
