Recipe for crashing a large party
Twenty-one members of five Exeter area churches traveled to Mardi Gras to share their faith
The streets in the Latin Quar-
ter of New Orleans was- the
mission field for 21 people
from Exeter area churches
during Mardi Gras.
At right, Pastor Vernon Dean
of the . Exeter . Pentecostal
Church (right) handed out bro-
chures at Mardi Gras urging
people to 'get right with God'.
By Pastor Vernon Dean -
NEW ORLEANS - Begin this
- recipe with 3-4 million men and
women converging on a•small arca
of New Orleans for a week •long cel-
ehration called Mardi Gras. Add
trillions of gallons of beer. ale. rum
and any other alcoholic .beverage
imaginable. Ensure • that there is a'
large percentage of those present
who are of the homosexual per-
suasion.. .
Play •an unending -game in which
.the woolen walking in the streets
ate challenged by the thousands of
-spectators on the balconies to "hare
• their breasts in • return for some'
,, heads ,which arc thrown down to
them as their "reward". In some cas-
es both men and 'women play the
game. haring.all. •
•Observe -that throughout the cel -
chi -anon. occasionally a man. will he
seen':walking stark naked through
the streets. Add dozens of .carol
card. psychic and palm readers. Let
the celebration begin.
Now add 21 •men and women
from five churches in the Exeter
,arca. These brave souls had endured
the rigor of a 26 -hour:. non-stop
school bus ride to New Orleans, to
walk these same streets to preach
the good news. of salvation through
Jesus Christ.
From the youngest to the oldest,•
these 2I joined up with nearly
2,000 other Christians from across.
North America. in providing. the
light of the gospel in the middle of
a modern day Sodom and. Go-
morrah. All of these "radical;
Christians gave out little tracts or
brochures inviting people to. "get
right with God." -
On Friday morning, .February 20.
a table was set up in Jackson
Square in the middle of the festiv-
ities where free Bibles were distrib-
uted. 'Simultaneously, Christians
began reading the Bible from Gene-
sis to Revelation, out loud, taking
15 -minute shifts until. the: entire
Bible was read around sixty two
hours Tater. Many of the party goers
received a free Bihlc, had questions
answered and even received prayer.
Some of those . who had gone to
party.discovered that true happiness
is not found by trying to wash their
problems away with alcohol or •get-
ting involved in lewd and pro-
miscuou,s behavior hut' rather
through a relationship with Jesus
Christ.
Here are some of the comments
from those who traveled from the
Exeter area.:
/,
"I was mostly impressed by all
the love shared by the other 2,000
Christians in the middle of this den
of sin. It was a, life changing ex-
perience for me."- Jim Granger
"Mardi Gras was a .good ex-
perience. I had many opportunities
to witness and hope that what .1
shared had some effect on the peo-
ple I talked to* What the Lord has
done in my life through this is even
more significant." - Paul Buttar
"Going to Mardi Gras to tell and
show the importance of a personal
relationship with Jesus Christ was
amazing. Not only is it the only
way to heaven, hut it also is what
people need to fill that deep down
longing inside:" - Kevin Bierling
"Tb my surprise. I was amazed at,
how many people were there and
how they were caught up in the
drinking, beads and fun. If they
only knew the power of, the love of
Jesus." - Sheila Rodger
"What a life changing.experience
16 witness on the streets of Mardi
Gras. It provided a real awakening
to the true spiritual battle that , we
• are in. There are a lot of hurting,
lonely people dying in their sin on
the streets of New Orleans. I
learned that we do not need to go to
Mardi Gras to find these people hut
they are also right in our own
neighborhoods and communities." -
Connie Miller
lit was like walkinginto per-
version and corruption add telling
the people the pure and holy gospel
of Jesus Christ and His love." -
Charlotte Webber
"Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras) is the.
ultimate in peer pressure. People
doing things they would never
dream of doing anywhere else. The
real question becomes. 'Where arc
yod going to spend eternity?"' -
Bert and Tina Vissi:hcr
"It was a- awesome experience. f,
know. God wanted me to go there
and share Jesus and also to be liv-
ing out this gospel as a lifestyle in
-my everyday life." - Jesse Stahle
"If you want your life to change.
yourperspective on the condition
of man to he challenged. then sim-
ply take the gospel of Jesus Christ
down to the streets •of Mardi. Gras.
Passivity, religiosity, . and lack of
compassion have to go. Only the
power of the love of God can pen-
etrate a place like that: and it did!"
- Coby Amoral
"This trip was a serious life-,
changing event that really brought
the stories and lessons of the Bible
to a sharp focus. I felt what it was
like to stand up for what I believe
as a Christian in a hostile, re-
bellious environment. Crosses with
'Christ died for You' were propped
up on street corners where cross -

hack _alleys and park benches)." -
Mary Cassell
"God has really changed all 21 of
us so much in ways that seem to be
unexplainable. This trip really made
me feel a great Iovc for those who
donft have Jesus in their lives. They
arc miserable and need something
to fill the void. They try to fill it

In observing the blatant displays
of perversion and sin at_thc Mardi
Gras, i can't help but remember that
Jesus said -.in Matthew' 24:38-41
"For in the days. before the .flood.
people were eating and: drinking,
marrying and giving in marriage, up'
to the day Noah entered the ark; and
they knew nothing about what
would happen until the flood came
and took them all away. • That is
how it will be at the coming of the
Son of Man: Two men will he in
the field; one will be taken and the
other left. Two women will be
grinding with a hand mill; one will
be taken and the other left."
Thank God that He is a God of
love, compassion and mercy. But
He is also a God of judgment. I
hope to make a difference before it
is loo late for many people.
