Steer wrestling school held
One of the 15 people attending the steer wres-
tling- school at K-7 Stables on weekend prac-
tices on. the dummy steer. Instructor for the
school was Ed Dewetering of the Exeter area.

By Jim Brown
WINGHAM - Ed Dewetering of the Exeter area has
been steer wrestling for less than five years. .
Now .he is instructing people who have never steer
wrestled.belorc about the techniques of the sport.
Fifteen people between the ages of 15 and 31 were at
the K-7 Stables on the weekend to learn how. to steer
wrestle.
Each day started with an instructional video on steer
wrestling. After learning how to lean over while riding
the horse to grab the steer, the students learned to
jump onto a dummy steer. • '
Dewetering has competed on the Ontario rodeo cir-
cuit for a number of years, and has' taught on' a
smaller scale. He said he got involved in steer wres-
tling after seeing.thc sport at,a rodeo in Grand Bend.
"I told myself, that if they can do it, 1 could do it."
said Dewetering. ,
Now, as :well as,competing in rodeos in Ontario
and Quebec, he also competes in three rodeos in the
United States.
He said one of the prohlems'many new corners to
rodeos have is getting to ride horses. He said a lot of
the rodeo people don't want to let someone they don't
even know ride their horse in an event.',
Dewetering said he usually has three horses that
other competitors can use,
Although he has been competing Ior several years,
this was the first class he had even given. He noted
that has has instructed three to four dt a time on occa-
sions. but never a class this size'.
He said, the response to the steer wrestling school
v. as pretty good.
People attending, the school came from Sarnia,
Newmarket, Strathroy, Stratford,. Orangeville and
places in between.
The Ontario rodeo circuit -will 'have 24 rodeos this
year. The annual Exeter rodeo will he held in' August
with a rodeo also scheduled in August for Lucknow.
- The earnings arc pretty good for the competitors.
First prize in most events is $600'to $700,with first
prize in team roping being. $1.500.
A number of events arc held during the winter
months at K-7 Stables. Practices are.hcld Fridays at 7
p.m. and again on Sundays from,,I toff p.m.

! think the people of the Grand

great deal of time and money in...
Dear Editor:
As a Stephen Townshiop tax payer/resident, 1 for
one enjoy the entertainment at the Grand Bend Mo-
torplex. 1 go every chance I. get and meet several
other -Stephen Township residents -there as well As
a Stephen Township resident that only lives one-
half mile down the road from the Motorplcx facili-
ty, I have no complaints about the modest noise:
Even the jet car shows only last approximately five
YOl l is
minutes and run usually- twice a day. That's not
much.considering the entertainment it provides and
the crowd it draws.
1 think the people of the Grand Benet, Motorplex
have invested a great deal of time and money in
something that not only Stephen'Township benefits
from but also surrounding areas, whether it be at the
gas pumps, food establishments, lodging etc. 1 have
spoken with many people coming from all over the
country_ at ihe-Moiorplex anithe_y- all say its a greal
facility that provides exciting entertainment.
