ball wraps up
EXETER — The South Huron District High
School boys basketball season came to an end
last week on a positive but titleless note:
• The midget "boys made' it to the final at the
season -ending tournament they hosted on
Thursday but fell short to the undefeated Sea -
forth squad 60-51. Down by seven at the end of
the first half, the Panthers came within three
points of Seaforth but couldn't find the twine
when it counted.
The story of the game was Seaforth's Joe Ka -
merman who scored 34 points. Kyle Farwell led
the Panther attack with 15 points, with Henny
Pfaff adding 10 and Brent Hoffman nine.

The seniors' season came to an end on Friday
after they lost their semi-final to host Goderich
54-35. The Panthers were up 16-13 at the end
of the first half, but gave up 18 points and
scored just four in the third quarter.
Coach Terry O'Rourke said his team didn't
match up well against Goderich's size or quick-
ness.
"We almost had to play a .perfect game, and
we did inthe first. half," O'Rourke said. "The
guys played really well."
Jeremy VanEsbroeck led South Huron with
13 points; Darryl Romphf added . seven and
Ryan. Beattie scored five points.
The seniors finished fourth in Huron and
O'Rourke said he'll lose only three or four
players to graduation next season .with a• few
juniors moving up to senior.

Classiques look at competitive ranks
DELHI — Continued top results including a seventh in the gold final at
the Bernie Devcau adult precision skating competition in Delhi on -the
weekend against competitive teams has the Exeter Classiques looking at
moving from the recreational to the competitive ranks. -
Coach Kathy Merner said her team beating out two competitive teams
(Exeter was the only rec team in the class). at the Delhi meet. The Clas-
siques finished second out of 30 teams from as far -away as Zurich, Swit-
zerland and B.C. in the first skate to move to the gold final skate (those
finishing 11-20 skate in silver and those 21-30 compete in bronze). Merner
said her team would have finished at the top of f the silver ranks.
"1 totally thought we would be 10th (in the second gold skate)," she said.
"Weare sitting right on the edge of becoming competitive."
Making the move to competitive means bigger financial backing, more
ice time and a higher level of dedication from Exeter area skaters, Merner
said.
This weekend the Classiques compete in the Chatham Sun Country com-
petition before performing at the Exeter Figure Skating Club carnival on
Sunday. Carnival festivities at South Huron Rec Centre start at I p.m.

Novice ringette team wins
gold at Seaforth tourney
SEAFORTH — The Exeter nov-
ice ringette team has won more
gold medals by taking the Seaforth
tournament on the weekend.
Exeter beat St. Thomas in the fi-
nal 5-1 on goals scored by Michelle
Desjardine (2), Ashley Bedard,
Kristy Blane and Kristyn Regier.
Assists were earned by Kelsey
Pinder (2), Kristy Blane, Lauren
Taylor, Mecia Drummond, Kristin
Ferguson, Jordan Phillips, Janine
Baer, Shauna Skinner and Jasmine
VanHaarlem.
The win over St. Thomas was a
rematch — Exeter lost their first
match of the tournament to them 5-
2. Baer and Desjardine scored for
Exeter with Desjardine, Pinder,
Phillips and Kristy Blane picking
up the assists.
Exeter beat Dorchester 7-4 in

game two. Goals were scored by
Taylor, Drummond, Desjardine (all
with two each) and VanHaarlem.
Assists went to VanHaarlem, Kris-
ty Blanc, Kelsey Pinder, Ferguson
(all two each), Regier. Philips,
Ashley Bedard, Lindsay Blanc and
Baer.
Exeter edged Dorchester again 4-
3 in game three. Scoring for Exeter
were Taylor (2), Desjardine and
Kristy Blanc with assists by Baer
(2), Pinder, Drummond, Ferguson,
Lindsay Blane, Bedard and Van -
Haarlem.
Coach Angie Desjardine said ex-
cellent goaltending by Lindsay
Blanc and Skinner and "superb de-
fensive moves" by Pinder, Drum-
mond and Ferguson were key to the
victories though all players put in
solid efforts.
Chiefs tied up 1-1
EXETER — The Exeter Juvenile Chiefs are
locked in a 1-1 tie with New Hamburg in. their On-
tario Minor Hockey Association quarter -final
playoff series.'
On Saturday the Chiefs hosted New Hamburg and
edged the visitors 3-2. Assistant coach Mike Soldan
said the game was highlighted. by strong checking
and some heavy hits.
The teams played a scoreless first with Exeter's
Ben Kaak breaking the double zeros at 13:31 of the
second with assists going to Greg" Hendrick and
Blake Schade.
New Hamburg went ahead of the Chiefs 2-1 after
scoring a pair of goals only 39 seconds apart near
the end of the second period. Exeter goattendei
Dennis Roth lost a race to the blueline for the puck
on one of the goals.
The Chiefs came out strong in the third period.:
John Rutten scored at.9:33 to tie it up with assists
going to Matt Froud and Many deBruyn. Exeter

went ahead for good about a minute and a half later
when deBruyn put one in from Hendrick and Froud.
New. Hamburg satisfied their home crowd by
beating Exeter 4-1 on Sunday. Soldan said the
Chiefs gave up the first two goals after getting into
penalty trouble and couldn't execute like' they did
the night before. Rutten scored Exeter's Ione goal
with Richardson assisting.
The Chiefs played game three on - the .road last
night after the Times -Advocate went to press and
.next host New Hamburg on Saturday at 8:30 p.m.
Game five; if necessary, is set at New Hamburg on
Sunday at 8:45 p.m. or 7 p.m.
In Southern Counties league action last week, Ex-
eter beat host St: Marys 4=1–Paul-Knight scored two
goals for the Chiefs with singles going to Jeremy
Stewart and Brian Richardson. Assists went to Ryan
Freiter, Schade (2), Kaak, Hendrick and Scott Ra-
senberg.
Huron Hurricanes in high gear
VANASTRA -. The Huron
Hurricanes Aquatic Club recently
participated in two meets. First
- came Western Region B Champs, a
championship meet for swimmers
whose times are in the top 30 per
cent in the province. One must
qualify -to swim B champs, howev-
er, swimmers who have earned five
provincial qualifying times are no
longer eligible to swim at B's.
The Hurricanes had 18 swim-
mers qualify to attend this meet.
They were: Candace Becker and
Aaron Datars from Dashwood.
Lesley Burton from Wingham,
Jessie Connolly, Sarah Datema,
Jason and Lindsay Kloss, Scott
McNichol, Allison Segeren,
Valerie Otten, Jessica Tyndall and
Andrea Vanderloo from Clinton,
Mike Durst, Amber Wisscr, and
Meghan Morris from Goderieh,
Kelly Ann and Laurie Vandendool
from outside of Seaforth.
Burton placed fifth in the 400
I.M. and the 200 breaststroke, sev-
enth in the 100 breaststroke, fifth in
the 200 i.M., sixth in the 50
freestyle and eighth in the 100
freestyle. Durst won gold in the
400 I.M. and the 200 I.M. and
bronze in the 100 and 200 butterfly.
He also placed fifth in the 200
metre backstroke.
The Hurricanes then went to
Tillsonburg to participate in a swim
meet this past weekend. In the 10
and under boys division, Patrick
Livingston won bronze in -the 200
I.M. and the 200 breaststroke. He
"placed fifth in the 50 butterfly and
sixth in the 100 free. Alex Clarke
placed sixth in the 100 breaststroke.
Brittany Segeren won silver in
the 400 freestyle and bronze in the
200 fly, fourth in the 800 free and
fifth in the 100 free, in the 1 1 -12 -
year old girls age group.
In the 13-14 year old girls,
Burton won gold in the 200 fly, sil-
ver in the 200 backstroke, the 100
fly, the 200 back and bronze in the
200 I.M. and the 200 breaststroke.
Melanie Culbert won gold in the
200 backstroke, 400 freestyle, 400
I.M., 200 freestyle and silver in the
200 fly, Datema placed fourth in
the 200 backstroke and the 400
I.M. and sixth in the 100 freestyle.
Vanderloo placed fourth in the 200
fly, fifth in the 200 breaststroke and
sixth in the 200 backstroke.
McNichol won bronze in the 100
breaststroke, and placed sixth in the
200.I.M._in the 13-14 year old boys
division.
In the 15 and over girls division,
Jessie Tyndall placed fifth in the
200 I.M. and sixth in the 200
breaststroke. Katie McGregor
placed fourth in the 200 breast-
stroke and sixth in the 100 metre
breaststroke.
