By Craig Bradford T -A Reporter EXETER •— A first round exit from the playoffs is only. two games away if the Exeter Jr. D Hawks hockey club can't find a way to score on the Mitchell Hawks. Exeter lost their first, -two games of their Morenz Division semi )anal against Mitchell last week: a 4-3 overtime loss at home on Friday and a 3-2 loss in Mitchell on Sat- urday.- - - Exeter scored first at 5:14 of the first on Friday when a pass from Chris McDonald careened off a Mitchell 1lefendera nt goaltender "Troy Chessell. Assists were award- ed to Ryan Chamney and Dan Tay- lor. Mitchell tied it up at 14:53 of the second while on the powerplay. Ex- ctcr went ahead 2-1 at 12:37 with Erik Ahayof notching the goal with Greg Goodwin earning the assist. Mitchell tied it up again while shorthanded at 6:04 of the second., ,Exeter went ahead 3-2 at 9:15 of the third on a goal by Sean McCann (assisted by Jeff Glavin and Dave Farquhar). • But Exeter couldn't hold .Mitchell who tial things '3-3 at 5:08 of the third. 4litchell put the game on ice at. Dave Revington said of Mitchell's close checking Irish split with Seaforth LUCAN — The Lucan Jr. D Irish hockey club's hest of seven di- vision semi-final series with Seaforth will go at least six games after the teams split their two games last week. At home on Wednesday, Lucan squeezed by Seaforth 7-5. Three powerplay goals (one each period) and three goals in the second pe- riod powered Lucan to the win. Irish goals were ,scored by Greg Henderson (2), Bob Grant, Kevin Dunhar,'Ncal Costello, Ben Doh - hie and Chad Greenlee with assists going to Costello. Greenlee. Da- ryl Boshart (2). Grant, Mike Jarenehenko, Mark Philips. Mike Rohh and Henderson. Greenlee scored the winner un the powerplay early in the third and Henderson scaled the win with 1:26 by shooting into Seafirrth's empty net. Lucan's Chad Lamhourn •was thrown out of the game after fight- ing with Sealorth's Pat Culligan with'about two minutes left in the game. Lucan lost 5-3 in Seaforth on Sunday. Rohh. Henderson and Dan Hardick provided the Irish goals with assists going to George Ste- phens, Philips. Jaremchenk'o, Grant and Boshart. Lucan and Seaforth-Were tied 3-3 at the end of the first but the Irish couldn't solve Seaforth goalie Chuck Robertson in the final two frames despite 11 shots in each period. Irish co -coach Bill Bourne said his team) had a good first period on Sunday but got into some penalty problems in the second and third and couldn't regroup. Despite Scaforth's nine penalties in the first period, Lucan couldn't score despite good pressure. Bourne said his team will have to play more like they did at home on Wednesday if they hope to gel by Seaforth. "We have to go 60 minutes and get refocused." he said. The Irish host Seaforth tonight at 8:15 p.ttr. and travel to Seabird) for game four on Friday at 8:30 p.m. Game five- is -at Lucan on March 4 at 8:15 p.m.. gamic six at Seaforth on March 6 and game seven (if necessary) will he at Lucan on March 7 at 8:30 p.m. Salmon & Trout Derby now set for May 15-24 GRAND BEND — The Grand Bend Salmon & Trout Derby will have hopeful anglers trying to hook the big one a week earlier than originally planned. Derby chairperson Tim Steele said the derby will run from May 15-24 instead of May 22-31. He said the change is due to the shon- encd Sarnia derby that runs from May 1-10 and because the Kin- cardine derby has been moved to May 25-31. The angler .hat hauls in the biggest salmon (by weight) will earn $5,(XX) in cash and prizes. Steele said prizes will also go to the top 15 salmon caught with separate prizes going for the higgcst trout caught. Tickets cost $15/person or $25/ family (dad, mom plus kids under age 15). The Panthers bested Stratford North- western in the final 5-15, 16-14 and 15- 12- to take home the gold medals. South Huron got fo the final after fin- ishing second behind Stratford North- western in " pool play with wins over Wingham F.E. Madill and Stratford St. Michael's. The Panthers defeated Strat- ford Central in their semi-final 15-12, 8- 15 and 17-15.
