Hawks and Irish confident going into playoffs
By Craig Bradford

EXETER — The Exeter Jr. D
Hawks hockey club clubbed the
Lucan Irish 7-2 at South Huron Rec
Centre on Friday in what could be
-their last battle this seasoi
But the match could he a
preview of the M, 'ren „ion
playcff final if Ex. i Lucan
win their division semi-final series
versus Mitchell and Seaforth 're-
spectively.
The Irish got off to a quick start,
Mike Robb breaking the scoreboard
at 3:2$ of the first period off a pass
from Gary Hudson with Chad
Greenlee giving Lucan a two -goal
lead 28 seconds later with assists
going to Chad Lambourn and Daryl
Boshart.
But that would be it for the Irish
when it comes to scoring. Exeter
put up seven unanswered goals,
four of them on the powerplay.
Greg Goodwin got Exeter going by
scoring at 8:40 of the first with as-
sists going to Sean McCann and
Jeff Glavin. Jason Dunlap evened
the score at 17:13 while Exeter was
on the powerplay, Jeff .Campbell
drawing the sole assist.
The Hawks went ahead for the
first time at 1:18 of the second pe-
riod while on the powerplay. Ryan
Chamney scored with assists
earned by Erik Abayof and
McCann.
The turning point of the game
came when the Hawks scored two
-shorthanded goals less than -a min-
ute apart during the same penalty
early in the second period.
Abayof scored the first short -
hander from Campbell at _ 17:26
with Campbell scoring his first of a
pair of unassisted goals at 18:16.
Exeter's last two
goals came on the
, powerplay in the
third, the first from
Greg Goodwin at
13:21 (assists to
Campbell and Dun-
lap) and Campbell at
18:25.
The penalty -filled game was al-
most•an anti -climax for both clubs
since their season end ranks and
playoff match -ups were already
clinched, Hawks coach/G.M. Dave
Revington said. -
"It was pretty stupid with both
sides trying to injure players when
we are both going into the
playoffs," Revington said of how
the game got chippy in the third.
Lucan racked up 27 penalty min-

utes including two fighting majors
and game misconducts in the third
alone while Exeter was penalized a
similar number of minutes.
Hawks co -coach Jason Bukala
was not impressed. with his team's
play.
"The effort was horrible, our
worst of the season," he said sim-
ply. "Exeter did everything twice as
good as we did." -
Since they had first • place
clinched, Lucan dressed only about
half of their regular
line-up so the coach-
ing staff could see
how some younger
players could work
out next season..
But Bukala said that
is no excuse for how
the rest of the regulars played.
Exeter finished the regular season
in second place at 23-16-1-1 (wins,
losses, ties, overtime losses) and 48
points. Thcy now face third place
Mitchell in the first round -of the
playoffs. Mitchell finished the sea-
son at 21-17-2 with 44 points but
had Exeter's -number during the
regular season, winning the season
series 3-2.
That kind of recordversus a

coaches a little nervous. Not Rev-
ington.
"We're relatively healthy," he
said about going into the playoffs.
"We won five in a row to finish
(before Saturday's 5-4 loss in
Lambeth). We arc a much im-
proved team compared to the one
six weeks ago."

place
irstplace at 25-13-2-2 and 54 points.
They now face fourth place Sea-

was just an aberration.
"Our team went 7-3 in the last 10
games," he said. "And we reached
our goal of 25 wins. We're really
focused going into the playoffs.
The key will definitely he dis-
