The behaviour -of young people. cspe- cially'when. their actions are violent, challenges some of our most basic assumptions about the edu- cation system. When even a small. number of kids break the law or commit violent acts, their aggres- sion raises questions about our ability as families. schools and communities to transmit the.values of caring; responsible, non-violent, citizenship. We are all forced to look more carefully at our corn- munities and our schools -How -serious -is -the Deb Homuth problem? Are my kids safe -at school? Thc short answer I believe•is yes. At South Huron A Code of - Behaviour is enforced consistently every day. Harassment issues are dealt with head-on. Zero tolerance to violence is enforced and A' Safe-Schools'Committee will meet shortly to review where prob ' terns remain. These are management techniques that represent dill- genre and attention to potential risks and threats to - a safe school.- However, 1 would be naive if I didn't recognise the reality. that . our school, like every..other school in this province, -could suddenly find itself in the"headlines cif papers because ot`a violent act at school. Why? Because the profile of -the -young offender, as identi- fied by the Canadian Justice Department, applies as much here as anywhere. Young offenders are characterized by family problems including conflicts•at home; abuse in its varying forms: school pro- grams including truancy, failing grades or disrespect fortcacliers; antisocial behaviour including drug or alcohol abuse and excessive peer influence. One wonders. &excessive viewing of television • could he added to the list. Common scnsc .tclls,us that television; strongly influences our youth's beliefs and attitudes. By the'end Of . their elementary school education children will have witnessed 8000 murders and over 10.000 acts of violence. By thc tine they com- pletc grade 12. they will have spent between -3000 and 4000 hours more in front of the television than in the classroom. Given those -,statistics 1 wonder sometimes how schools can possibly compete.. Yes, we arc teaching -kids ahout.resolving conflicts and handling - thcir anger: But, are we ever.going to be able to say we do enough as long as there -is even one student who is being picked on. bullied_ or harassed" Will weever he able to do enough as long_as-children and young people come to school with the first-hand experiences Of Violence in movies, television and their honies that they do'? • - We have a tremendous responsibility in school to try to make a difference. We cannot afford as a society tolet up. For as Jeffery • Simpson wrote. in his editorial in the Globe and Mail this.w.eek, -111. the fullness of time..a country's future is.more rooted in its educa- tion system than in anything elsc..What kids Icarn and how they - • lcarn it, what experiences mould them; what skills and interests they develop -are way more .important. than the value of the dollar. the lat- est government pronouncement and lot of what conveniently passes for news." From left, Kenny Al- len, Daniel Campbell, Brandon Consitt, Bradley Young, Lorna Spencer, Connie Townsend, Jennifer Young, Mary Jo Corbett, Jennifer Soudant and Lindsay Allen. By Kate Monk T -A Reporter HENSALL - it started with an idea of Connie Townsend, the food service supervisor at Queens- way Nursing Home in Hensall. With the first week in Fchruary being food awareness week, she thought it would be good to have a focal drive for the Exeter and Area Food Bank. The initial idea was to have Queensway staff donate food stuffs. - Sandra Consitt, Queensway's cook, picked up on the idea and got the Hensall Sparks, Brownies. Girl Guides, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts involved as well. • The children donated food and canvassed the Hen- sall community last Monday and Thursday nights. After the canvassing, representatives of the groups took stock of the donations - 16 boxes in to- tal. Thc food drive reinforced community -mindedness and the leaders were pleased the people in Hensall were so generous. One family gave an entire box of food. Carol Gascho, Queensway activities director add- ed the effort was an appropriate Valentine's gift t the food bank from Queensway and the community. Usborne & Hibbert Mutual Fire Insurance Company .
