OPP help clean. up after ice stone
The -Western Region OPP.sent 60 officers from throughout the,
region to eastern Ontario on Monday to help clean up after the ice
storm there.- - •• - •• •
The officers are -assigned to the' arduous task for one.week.
Huron County OPP Const. John Marshall said the contingent

Minor injuries after Usborne crash
USBORNE TWP.:- Five peoplewere taken.to Exeter's South Huron
Hospital after an accident --on Hwy, 83 at Huron Rd. 11 in-Usborne Twp.
at about .12:45 a.m. on Dec. 31, Marshall said.
An '88 Buick driven by Curtis Costello, 17. of Seaforth hit a '97
Dodge van driven by William Chandler, 67, of Dashwood.Costello and
his three passengers,_Mark.Vock, •17, of Egmt ndville, Dean Price, 17,
of Seaforth,.and Shawn Costello, 18, of Seaforth, all received minor
injuries- and were transported by amhulancc for South Huron Hospital •-
for treatment. One passenger ..inthc.Chandler vehicle. Rita Chandler,
66, of Dashwood, was also taken by ambulance to South Huron
Hospital for treatment of minor injuries: •-
- -Both vehicles received severe damage and .Costello was charged
with fail to yield -right of way -under the Highway Traffic Act, Marshall

Pickup stolen in series of thefts
STANLEY TWP. - Thieves ended up ditching a pickup stolen from
Lot 17. Conc. -2 in Stanley Twp. off the dead end of Railway St. -in
Seaforth on Jan. 9 aficr•.i series of;vehicle .thefts starting in Howick"
Twp. overnight-Jan..7-8-
Marshall said the series of theftsstarted • when a '98 green Ford -
Taurus was stolen from Lot 14, Conc.:7 in Howick Twp. The keys were
left in the car.
Then a '90 Ford Aerostar van was stolen from 111 Goderich Si. E: in
Seaforth overnight Jan. 8-9. The keys were left in the van and it was
located at Lot -6. Conc. 15 in Grey Twp.
-An '88 Chevy SIO pickup was stolen across the road from where the
Aerostar van was -recovered Overnight Jan. 8-4. Thieves tried to steal
another'vehicic-from the -scene but it was left at the end of the -
driveway. The keys"were left in both vehicles and the pickup was found
-behintj 137 West William St. in Seaforth.
Thieves then stole a. '92 Ford Aerostar van -from 73 Centre St. in
Seaforth the same night. The keys were again left jn the vehicle and it
was found on Stanley Twp. Conc. 2/3 .where it had been run off the
road, struck a tree head-on and rolled on its side. The van was Telt with
extensive damage. : = - -
Marshall said thieves stole two more vehicles on Jan. 9 While they
were using the Aerostar stolen from 73 Centre St., Seaforlh. An '87'
Chrysler with a flat tire was stolen from Lot 33, Conc. 3 in
Tucker -Smith Twp. but abandoned 300m away. From the same home
thieves stole a '93 Chev GM4-pickup. it was found on Tuckersmith'
sideroad 25/26 where it had been rolled over just -cast of 1,1w bei
pickup was Icft with extensive damage.
After rolling the Aerostar on Stanley Conc. 2/3. thieves then stole
the. '86 Chevy K I0 pickup from Lot 17, Conc, 2 in Stanley that ended
up at the dead end cif Railway St.,in Scaforth. The keys had hecn left in
the truck.
All the thefts arc believed to be linked: Marshall said.
"In every one of these thefts, the keys were quite visible or in the
ignition." Marshall said. "These people are just looking -for a quick
ride. If the vehicles were locked thieves prohahly wouldn't bother:"
He then shared a telling statistic: 98 per cent of vehicles stolen in
Huron County had the keys somewhere inside.
Marshall said the OPP needs assistance from the public to solve •
these crimes. If anyone has any information on the thefts, contact either

Hay Twp. car rolled
GREY TWP. - A '95 Ford driven by Gerald Willis, 46, of RR I
Hensall rolled onto its roof into the north ditch on Huron Cty. Rd. at
about 7:20 p.m. on Jan. 4.
The vehicle was severely damaged hut no injuries were reported,
Marshall said.
Scratch tickets stole from Triangle
EXETER - Thieves treated themselves to $2,475 worth of 'Scratch
and Win' tickets and $100 cash after breaking into the Triangle
Discount store at 433 Main St. S. in Exeter on Jan. 3 between 8:30 a.m.
and 12:30 p.m., Marshall said.
Thieves gained entry through the rear office. Some tickets have the
store number 39-1273 stamped on the hack side.
Reportable damage now over 1,000
Reportable accidents will have to involve over $ 1,000 damage due
to a change in the Highway Traffic Act, Petrolia OPP Const. Bob
Bossence said.
The change ups the minimum for reportable accidents from $700
and took effect on Jan. 1, 1998.
if damage to a vehicle after an accident appears less than $1,000,
those involved can still report the collision to a municipal or OPP
station or detachment or a collision reporting centre.
All accidents involving injuries or fatalities must be reported to
police by law.
Each driver after any accident Is required by law to exchange in
writing their names, addresses, insurance, the plate numbers and names
and addresses of the registered vehicle owner.

SAINTSBURY - St. Patrick's held their Evening
Prayer service on January 10 at 7 p.m. to celebrate
'the "Baptism of Our Lord" with Courtney Mac-
Gillivray leading from the Book of Alternative Ser-
vices. -
The children's focus was "Remembering God's
Special Love Through Baptism" with the • worship
table set with a cedar branch, a jug of water, basin,
large white candle, individual candies and a picture
cutout of a dove, several the symbols of baptism.
Heather MacGillivray and Katie -Scarlett assisted
with the scripture readings and Bob MacGillivray.

CENTRALiA - An Open Forum will be held on January 19 .at 7
p.m. with The Rt. Rev. Bill Phipps, Moderator of The General
Council of The United Church of Canada. This event will be held at
Exeter United Church.
All written reports for the Annual Meetings should be provided to
Michelle Hcrn by January 15. Zion West will hold their Annual
Meeting on January 29 at 8 p.m. The Annual Meeting at Centralia
will be held February 4 at 8 p.m.
Centralia UCW hold first meeting in 1998
President Jean Caslick called the first meeting of the new year of
the Central U.C.W. to order on January 8.

The World Day of Prayer Service will be held in March at Central-
ia United Church. Group 1 will be in charge of the program and
Group II will organize the lunch.
Lois Wilson opened the program with prayer. Ellen Brown gave
the reading "Ship of Life" and Phyllis Tomes read scripture.

winners were Jack Boland and Mary Rhame. Janey McDowell won

Mischief
On New Years" Eve at the Hen-
sall arena. culprits- smashed the
drivers window out of the Disc
Jockey's- van. The van was
parked at the south end of the
arena. Beer bottles had been
thrown through the window.
Thieves then entered the vanand
stole some business papers and ,
bent the signal switch arm.
Suspicious fire •
Hensel'. fire department were
called to a fire at the apartment
building at 120 King St. at about
7:50 p.m..- on January 2. They
found a small fire burning in the
hallway of the apartment build-
ing and a second fire completely
engulfed. the kitchen of apart-
ment number 4. Extensive dam-
age was done in number 4- and
severe smoke damage through-
out all seven apartments. Arson
is suspected and the investiga- -
tion is continuing; -

passed By-law 03-98 on the 6th day of January, 1998 under Section 34
of the PLANNING ACT R.S.O. 1990.
AND TAKE NOTICE that any person or agency may appeal to the Ontario
Municipal Board in respect of the by-law by filing with the Clerk 'of the -
VILLAGE OF LUCAN not later than 3rd day of February, 1998 a notice,ot,
appeal setting out the objection(s) to the by-law and the reasons in
support of the objection(s). Only individuals, corporations and public -
bodies may appeal a zoning by-law to the Ontario Municipal Board. A
notice of appeal may not be filed by an unincorporated association or
group. However, a notice of appeal may be filed in the name of an

BY-LAW 03-98 rezones land described as Part of Lots 206 and 207 on
Registered Plan 188 in the Village of Lucan from "Residential Zone 1
(R1)" to Residential Zone 1 Exception '9 (R1-9)". This land is located on
the south side of Francis,Street, just east of Main Street and is shown
on the map below. -
THE PURPOSE of the Zoning -Bylaw Amendment is to permit the
expansion of the existing commercial activities (Nevin Motors) which
are located on the lands to the south of the subject lands.
THE COMPLETE by-law is available for inspection in the Office of the
Clerk during regular business hours.
