Aylmer (where - l was• born and
raised) •till I move into intrepid
Chas's old. pad isn't why l'm tad
tired most of the time.
It was the stress and eventual
heartbreak of seeing my former m-
munity newspaper. Our Community
Press (St. Thonias/Flgin County's
weekly). shut down .by •Bowes Pub-
lishing, after the L-o"ndon Free Press
and other ''Blackburn holdings i in-
cludingCCP as pan of Netntari were
bought by Sun Media..
The . new head honchos explained
that finances, or lack thereof, • spelt
the doom of OCP. :
-As-the-Ias P, L of course. was deeply •
saddened by the'sudden but inevitable closure Of my
paper. but constant cutbacks to 'editorial and other
departments to try and make ends meet turned the
paper into something tar less than what its founders, -
former publisher Patrick Kennedy and former editor
Susan McConnell. had envisioned and cranked -out
, to eager readers each week before their respective
forced and iLhosen departures from the paper.
1 wasn't even able to say a proper goodbye to our
faithful readers on behalf of our staff due to a dil-
igent and tacky power play 'by my bosses — they
pulled my last minute editorial becat' 1 assume. it
included the names of everyone ono had ever
worked or.contributed to OCP. some of whom were
politically incorrect names to breath aloud as far as
they were -concerned. - • •
Now I have a chance .for a fresh start at what I can
already tell is.a class newspaper, Jim. the outgoing
•Chns. reporters. Heather Mir .and Kate Monk and
everyone else here has been not just helpful. but
gosh darn friendly -1 found out quickly that • the"
• 'grand tromage'. Lorne Eddy. is a
real' newspaper man when he visited
the T -A on my first 'day here. some-
. thing the pig. cheeses at my former
company wruld only do atter :as;

Everywhere I- go here in the home

(though 1 haven't seen one... vet i. the

big cleats/skates/skis/shoes to fill. '
I accept the challenge to measure

ketballs to golf halls. rye been bowled over by bur-
ly football players. basketball point guards and nar-
rowly missed being squished by a horse at a hunter.

Please know that 1 will try to mirror .the com-
munity through my sports/news writing and photog-
raphy. 1 look -forward to meeting each and every one -

Bend to Kirkton and everywhere in between.

out there on the field. You've already put a bounce
in the step of this one-time weary scribe.

women's .Soccer club is playing in
its inaugural year,

column and reaffirm itself as a
team to contend- with. .
The game started off 'slowly with
both teams playing conservatively.

is wondering why they didn't do it.

to keep interest up in

years," Workman said. '

EXETER - Midget 'D' hardball has song its swanso'ng..: tier now.
'Exeter Minor •Baseball president Gary Hartman said the midgets '
folded June 1-5 due to a"lack of commitment" from players and re-
maining coaching _staff after manager Brad Gtegus announced he
was leaving Canada for a post in St. Lucia. Gregus.has been a site
superintendent with Ellis Don. _ •
Bantam coach Albert VanDvken said many .4 last season's -midget
players graduated to Juvenile while :inly ,ane of nine bantam gradu-
ates committed to play midget..
"Times have .;hanged." VanDyken said., ; Iohs have; a lot to do
with it.' , '
The midget program has run for seven straight years. Hartman
said. whsle minor hall has run two "hantam teams for -the last Live.
This season is the first time -Exeter has fielded only gine". bantam
team..
Kints. assistant manager for the midget team. said they
only had IO players signed and it- was difficult getting hantam
'players to till in on a regular basis. As a result. the team .had to tur-
felt two games:
• "We were only getting two or three .players out to practices. ' pie

Although the club was struggling`.vnh rwo wins and five susses.
Kints said that was noir a factor in their decision to fold this team. ,
"The guys who were out' were having fun. we had a good team this
year." 11e said .adding he. and coach Doug Schade prolonged their de-
cision to ;ee if things would turn around. We didn'r want to told it
up.. But if we knew what we know now -,e would"have cancelled it
long ago."
Bend poker run folds its cards

"We've talked to Power Boating
and it was a decision that didn't
come easily." Ivey said. "We want-
ed to do it right for the participants
and the spectators. We expect it
will be back next year." •
The grand opening of the Inter-
national Bluewater Bridge at Sar-
nia/Port Huron the same. day as
well as L'.S./Canada immigration
red tape made the event too dif-
ficult to pull together. Ivey said.
"it just got more and more dif
ticult logistically (to stage)," Ivey -
said on Monday. Traffic on the St.
Clair River will close for a couple
hours for the twinning of the
bridge.•
This was to be the first year the
Poker Run was to be an inter-
national event with the route start-
ing at Grand Bend with a stop at
Lexington.for lunch then wrapping
up at Sarnia Bay Marina. Ivey said
organizers hoped to attract more
American participants by changing
the route from Grand Bend-
Bayfield-Goderich-Kincardine to
the Canada-C.S. one:
