Year passes since Exeter flood
EXETER - A year ago on June
20 Exeter residents -experienced the
worst town flood since 1969. Ap-
proximately 3:5 inches of rain fell
in an hour according to the Aus=
•able Bayfield Conservation Author-_
ity gauges.
An estimated 100 homes and
businesses in the downtown area.
including Dinney Furniture and
Canadian Tire, were flooded with
water. debris and•in some cases
sewage.
The flood also caused problems
for area farmers who suffered a
two -fold loss. Young crops in
standing waterhad- the potential to
rot unless fields dried up..quickly
and the heavy rain washed topsoil
off fields leaving roots of plants
exposed.
The deluge was blamed on the
huge amount of rain that fell in a
verb+ short time. Town crews and
private citizens worked through the
night and early morning to clear
debris that blocked' some drains.
As well, some streets) that were
most, affected do not ,have any
storm drains.
..For weeks, the town worked . to
clean up the flood aftermath. Many
people lost furniture and private .
belongings in the flood and 'those.
affected by sewage were instructed
-to thoroughly disinfect the prem-
ises. -The Town Works•department
worked to collect much of theidatn
aged household items that •. were
ruined and take them to the landfill
site. The fire. department pumped
water and hosed mud away from lo-
cal businesses. Firefighters also
pumped.. water out of the South Hu-
rpn District Hosptial boiler room,
and aided in the Exeter Villa
clean-up.
EXETER - A plan to- turn the
property on 406 Main Street into a
parkette was set into motion as the
vacant municipal building was' de-
molished on Saturday. However,
the third element of a three-way
partnership was still missing from
the project. .
The Town of Exeter and the EBA
(Exeter Business Association) pur-
chased the property from the feder-
al goverrAnent in February, split-•
ting the •$45;000 -price tag.. to
construct a multi -functional green
space that could accommodate con-
certs and act as as focal point for
outdoor activities. •
However, the two groups are still .
waiting for a third party to come .
forthand help fund the park.
The Lions Club has maintained
an interest in the project since its
Start, hut it :has nut been able to
make a. financial commitment. •
Next week a group of students
from •`Fanshawc ' College will
present a design proposal to EBA
and council members.
John Wuerth, an. EBAr member'
who sits on the property develop-
ment committee, said the long-term
plan will include a hand shell
where local talent can -perform.
• "We want to create a•place.where .•

STEPHEN TOWNSHIP - The Stephen Township Arena Board
win -offer free skating to area shool students next winter even though
it has no financial support from Stephen Township Council.
uhe_pastshildren from McCurdy Mount -Carmel. and Stephen
Central.School enjoyed.free skating at the Stephen Township Arena.
but the program was placed in jeopardy recently after council cut the
program funding.• -
Last year the Arena Board received 550.00) in tax support plus a.
$2,550 grant which paid for the ice time used by the schools, -how-
ever. council reduced the ,board's budget this year cutting the:extra
52.550. from the 1998 budget. -
Jack Glavin Arena Board chairperson, said council left it up to the
board to decide whether it still offer the ice -time to the schools. but
. the board would have to absorb expenses like staff hours and hydro.
Glavin said all board members wanted to continue providing ices-
time
ce-time for the schools, but it would be difficult without council -fund-
ing. Most cif the money in reserves was used. to replace a de-
-teriorating•"chiller," a vital component in.the arena's cooling system
• and fundraising was not an option. ._
Despite the financial challepge the Arena Board'held a meeting on
Monday night and decided to keep the program.
"There is virtually no change. All the. schools will have the same
time -allotment they had last year.". said Glavin, adding the board.
will look at cutting costs elsewhere to compensate.
.However. he said the future of the program will ultimately depend
on the hoard's budget.
"We're going to try to help this year and welt take it from there.'
said Glavin.
