Lucan residents
raise flood funds
LUCAN - Service clubs, residents and businessel in Lucan came togeth-
er to raise mosey fqr flood relief in the Red River -Valley. On Thursday
night, an auction at the Lucan arena raised more than 86,000 for,the,peo-'
pie surrounding Morriss, Manitdba. , .
' ,The event's organizer Jeff Roestenherg said Morris was protected by
- diltes=but peoplq living around the town sustained heavy damages.,
A huge variety of items' were auctioned including furniture, books,
clothes: bicycles, hay and: gift certificates. cash, donations were also.ac-
cepte'd. ,
" Vvery organization helped," said Roestenb rg, adding "The word 'got
out, and it started snowballing. This is,one community helping anothet
community.

June 3. The meeting opened with

a Day" and a poem entitled "Fa -

The roll call was "Your Father's
second Name" and 'quote from the
Focus.' Luella Tiernan read about
Fireworks for Queen's Day.
Secretary and District Annual Re-
ports were .given by : Dorothy and
the treasurer's report by Kaclhe. -
The program consisted of the
motto "A lifetime without a friend
'is like a garden without a single
flower." A poem "Your Name" en-
couraged us to guard your name to
keep it spotless for •your son.
A skit "Tourist Season" was quite
amusing. A nursery rhyme for all
drivers was given followed by safe-
ty rules read by, Dorothy Restemay-
er.
Sports included - Tying a man's
tie, unwrapping a gift with instruc-
tions, and' identifying building
tools.

GRANTON - Several Granton residents enjoyed the annual Beef. Barbe-
cue at Denfield Park on June 7 sponsored by the Community Association.
Marjorie McColl had to be hospitalized in Maine following a sudden ill-
ness when 'she and. husband John were returning from a trip to the Mari-
times. Get well thoughts and prayers from this community.
The. Bryan picnic was held at the Granton park pavilion on June 8 with
an attendance of thirty-five. After supper, bridal showers were held for
Angela Nichol and Becky O'Hagan. President Bruce- Nichol chaired the
business and Margaret Bryan was secretary. Kim Jones was elected presi-
dent for the picnic on June 7, 1998' and Margaret Bryan will continue as
secretary. Sports committee will be Angela Nichol and Adolpho Silva..
At the' regular June meeting of Granton Lodge #483 A.F. & A.M. Bro.
Harold Hardie of Granton received his `fifty years a Mason' pin. The
'presentation was made by D.D.G.M. of South Huron Masonic District Rt.
Wor. Bro. Bruce Whitmore and Wor. Bro. Robert Spence, Master of
Granton Lodge.
At the Granton United Church on June 8 the anniversary service was
held. led by Pastor Normalie Voakes: Jim Swan of London was the guest
ri
speaker when his message was `Prayer you as the answer'. Marilyn Hum-
phrey'led the Psalm.
The choir sang 'You'll never walk alone' and 'Make rite a channel of
your love'.
A time of fellowship followed the service.
At St. Paul's Anglican Church in Kirkton on Sunday, Rev: Glenda Mea-
kin led the service of morning prayer. The message was about recognizing
or knowing the Holy Spirit through prayer, worship and openness.
UCW
Unit one met at Madeline Hardie's residence in Lucan' on June 5 for a
noon luncheon served by the hostess.
Members answered the roll call with readings. Business discussion in-
cluded the anniversary service on June 8, the general UCW on June 10,
the beef barbecue on June 18 and some catering on June 24.
Carlene Goos continued with the program reading about a Coyote
named Promise and Madeline concluded with a contest of sound alike an-
swers.
Unit 5 met at Alma Nicholson's place on, June 3. President Margaret
Spenceopened with a poem `Changing Seasons.' The devotional was
about a priceless gift.
The beef supper and other business was discussed. Then the program
convenor Florence Bryan read about the life of Billy Graham and two
poems `Tito day 1 met Daniel' and `God's Job' by an eight year old. The
meeting was closed with the Lord's Prayer in unison.
