Cash - croppers, dairy men and poultry people waxed increasingly impa- tient. as rain and cold persisted. Pigeon . people : (those who. prat-. tise the fine art of pigeon -racing) were also affected hy the coldest spring in 80 years: few were the oc- asions when the weather -was fa- vorable -for for spring training. As it was. the racing schedule had al-. ready- heen. put hack hy• a week. then the greatly anticipated open- ing races had to he cancelled he - cause of a day -long -rain. The weather again put a damper . on the• heightened enthusiasm - for the races- .of the following week when more rain --forced a hold -over of the pigeons.until the next day..• The- most recent rack frm • - Brockville and Belleville stirred up some of .the old excitement. Re- leased at 630 Saturday` morning, _the winning pigeon was clocked hy Norm Hardy -• from • Lucan at 15.06.32. This. pigeon flew the dis- tance of 484 kms. in six hours and - 36 minutes for a winning speed of 936. meters/min. Jim Whitworth from the Forest area placed second. third and fifth. (..Deal flyer Al de Hash took posi- tion four; Lucan flyer Mitch Siczech "Had these claimed position six 'pigeons raced and nine. • Harry .. on a 1 1/4 mile ters further. it scored a winning ve- locity of 110).490 nictersfmnl . while the speed .of Mitch's hird was 1099.821 meters/non. Had these pi- geons raced on a 1 1/4 mile horse track, the de Haan hird would have won by less than the length of a heak.. Another. de Haan., hird did well enough - to capture - third place. Mitch also took •po•• sitions six and 10. Norm Hardy's - . geons also few well in this race and placed fourth, fifth and eighth. Jim Whit- worth scored seven, '11 and 12. and Jack Brennan from downtown .Crediton. had a good pigeon that • placed ninth. Pigeons helonglnt;•In Adnan ':Ansenls, Jim Southern. and Ha' Winters brought upm •ihe rear. Along with. everyone eke. pigeon -'racers are -also hoping and praying for warmer, drier weather. Winters took poli- tion eight, and .Jim Southern from the Kerwood area 'took. the last place on the ;core sheet. -. The Belleville Contest was a neck- and -neck race with what : would have • heen a photo - finish in horse -racing. The pigeons were released at 8-:30 a,M. and AI de Haan clocked his first hird at. 13.4l.41.- Mitch ,Sic.'egh in Lucan - had clocked his first one a x sec- onds earlier. However. because the de Haan pigeon had to fly_,683 me - horse track, the de llaan hird would have won by less than the length of a beak." Have a sports tip?
