Fury win first
round Cup game
Ryan Hern 's spectacular performance
in net helped Exeter to a 1-0 win .
EXETER - The Exeter. Fury won
their first round Cup game 1-0 in a
shootout Wednesday in Ingersoll.
advancing to -the second round .in
Jul',.
The tightly played 'match was
scoreless through -90 minutes but
was not without its close calls, Pete
Nie:\Ilister nearly_ finished the
game in regulation time as he broke
in alone and had his shot rejected
by the keeper.
After two overtime halves the
game proceeded to penalty kicks to
decide the outcome. Atter missing
the first shot. Exeter scored on the
next tour to get the win. Goaltender
Ryan Hern made a tremendous div-
ing stop to keep the Fury in the
game.
As the last Ingersoll shot sailed
wide of the net. Bounmy . Chan-
samone stepped up and picked the
corner of the net giving Exeter the
dramatic victory. Also scoring for
Exeter in the shootout was Matt
Sims, Chuck Walker, and Pete
McAllister.
"Ryan Hern made some big sates
during regulation play to keep the
game scoreless and his save during
.the shutout was outstanding." said
player Jason M1cFalls.
At home on Sunday. the Fury •
came up with a lacklustre per-
formance, losing 2-0 to Bentica
from London. The game started
poorly -for the Fury as the visitors
scored in the first minute and had
the Fury players chasing the ball all
game. Atter notching their second
goal, the game became a chance for
Bentica to practice their passing
and execution as Exeter always
seemed one step behind their op=
ponents.
"Our overall defensive play was
poor. We didn't stick to our man
and ended up being out of position
a lot," explained McFalts. "We
chased the ball around the field like
a bunch of five year-olds."
The next game for the Fury is at
home Thursday against Embro and
Sunday in Courtland.
