Dear Editor: The Huron Women Teachers' Association is tak- ing an active partin helping the flood victims of Manitoba as they attempt to reclaim their homes and their schools. The association voted to send • $1,000 worth of bleach, soaps; towels, linens, bed- ding, paper products and cleaning tools to Manitoba Flood Relief through Harriston's Friends for Caring. and Sharing. Susan. Wyatt, a Brookside Public • School teacher whose sister is a Winnipeg resident and teacher, has been instrumental in purchasing the materials for the Women Teachers' Association. These•items will be shipped through Friends for Caring and Sharing in Harriston via a donated Hut- ton Transport truck on May 15. The Association ex- tends its thanks to Walmart, Zellers, Zehrs and the Huron County Board of Education for.their support of this project. : _ Teachers and classes in individual schools have chosen to get involved in various ways. For in- stance, Howick Central has decided to send part of the proceeds from its regular -fundraisers out to Manitoba Flood Relief. And Brookside Public School staff members did a poll of Huron County plumbers to search for drain plugs that would pre- vent sewage backup into homes. Schools have also been encouraged to send letters of support, class let- ters, cards and, posters to other schools in the affect- ed area; and some classes have been linking to the up-to-date flood coverage on the Inteinet. There is even an e-mail link that allows classes to send elec- tronic messages of support to Manitoba•flootd vic- tims and organizations. • Many teachers are also choosing to make personal financial commitments to the flood victims through the Manitoba Teachers' Society. The Huron Women Teachers' Association repre- sents approximately 250 female public elementary teachers in Huron County and is part of the Federa- tion of Women Teachers' Associations of Ontario. Wilhelmina Laurie, President, Huron WTA Flowers for all to enjoy • "It was the employees' money that purchased the bulbs and we personally planted these last fall..." Dear Editor: There is nothing like a spring bouquet to perk up .one's spirits end give yourself a 'rosier' frame of mind in these dull cold days which were supposed to'be spring. We hope this is the case for the indi- - vidual(s) who picked the bouquets of spring flowers from the flower beds arotmd the Olde Town Hall, first the hyacinth bouquet, then the narcissus bou- quet. You may have thought. 'Oh, it is just government - money and no one will miss a few flowers.' Wrong. It was the employees' money that purchased the bulbs and .we personally planted these last fall for all residents to enjoy in the spring. . • If you think you are 'special' and deserve a bou- quet now and then, come by as often as you like to look at the flowers, but please leave them in the flower bed for everyone to enjoy! Dear Editor: While doing a test in school using one of your ar- ticles, we, a grade eight class, found.many typo - .graphical errors in the story. The expectations for a student ofour grade level is to hand in mistake -free • work (or not receive full marks). Should not the ex- pectations for a local newspaper -be the same? - • Enclosed is a copy of the article to which we were referring. These mistakes could have been avoided if you had only proofread your work more carefully. Thank'you for your -contribution to our communi- ty and for your time spent in reading this letter. 1 Sincerely, The Grade Eight Class of McGillivray Central School Editor's Note:. Thank you for taking the time to let us know there is room for improvement in our news- paper. We do our best to keep the number of errors to a minimum, however, this time we fell short in this particular article. The item the students are referring to was a story about the support of a vicious dog by- law where we spelled the word "bylaw" and "pitbull " two different ways as welt as missing a couple of . words in other paragraphs. • Thanks from Exeter Public School To. show our appreciation we are holding a Volunteer Appreciation Tea... Misdirected anger "...many gun owners have been outspoken about their plans to lash back at the Liberal Party at the ballot box." Dear Editor. Not very many Canadian gun owners were pleased with the Liberal government's passage of Bill C-68 and the subsequent Firearms Regulations. 'Bill C-68 was misdirected, intrusive, it adversely.af feels fundamental property ownership rights and will cost the Canadian taxpayer close -to $100 mil- lion to implement. Perhaps what disturbed gun owners the most was the government's unwillingness to listen to factual arguments backed up with solid Canadian statistical research. The government kept repeating the liturgy "it was in the Red Book" when you elected us. The Red Book did make a two sentence reference to "safer streets,"•but it does, not refer to the highly contentious national firearms registration program, new licensing requirements, increased costs to the gun owner, placing -further limitations on the right to enjoy lawfully acquired property and, in some in- stances, forfeiture of legally acquired property with- out compensation. To put the situation into terms most people can : appreciate let's use an example of a family that owns 3 cars, an 8 -cylinder, a 6 -cylinder and a 4- • cylinder. In the interest of "public safety" the goy- ernment decides to ban all 8 -cylinder's and their owners are requested to turn them over for destruc- tion without compensation. According to the gov- .. ernment.s own research, which by the way they are . not prepared to make completely public, 6 -cylinder vehicles are also suspected of being a source of higher risk. Current owners may keep them; howev er, they may only drive their 6 -cylinder car on the. roads they personally.own. But don't worry the Jus- tice Minister assures us, your 4 -cylinder models are all right for now.. Remember we're talking 100's of millions of dollars of legally acquired property and • responsible owners who have done nothing wrong. Gun owners have a right to be angry. We have a. justice system that is broken and too easily lets vio• - lent criminals back on to the streets to offend again. For example, the Supreme Court of Canada's Askov decision opened the doors for an estimated 75.000 criminal cases to become permanently stayed or withdrawn.'These cases involved charges of rape, aggravated assault, drug trafficking, theft, extortion and armed robbery. Rather than deal with the real problems affecting justice, such as violent young of- fenders or organized gangs and drug trafficking, which are admittedly difficult to tackle, the govern- ment chose to go after the law-abiding gun owner. • Every time the rules and regulations change, it af- fects the gun owner's freedom to enjoy their lawful ly acquired property and costs them additional mon- ey, in fees and meeting ever changing safe storage requirements. • • Now that election time is here many gun owners have been outspoken about their pians,to lash back at the Liberal Party at the ballot box. Before doing so, I suggest we should stop and take a careful look at what we really want in a politician and how well those interests have been represented.by the incum- bent Huron -Bruce MP, Paul Steckle (Liberal). I've worked closely with Paul on the gun control issue and in the process have come to know him quite well. Paul is a listener and he is not afraid to 'make the extra effort to find out facts.for himself. He is a straight spoken 'man with both principle and •_ great integrity. Paul is well respected throughout Huron -Bruce's business and agricultural communi- ties and has worked diligently to represent the rid- ing's interests. Paul spoke out for us in caucus and in the House; Paul was present on the speaker's plat- form -during the Ottawa Rally and despite party dis- cipline Paul voted against BPI C-68. . • There are obviously many factors to take into con- sideration before casting your ballot on election day: however, if the passage of Bill C-68 is a major fac- tor for you kuggest you heavily weigh punistung the Liberal Party vs. the. kind of representation and voice Paul'Steckle has given to the gun owners of Huron -Bruce. We need more people with Paul Steckle's common sense, values -and guts in Ottawa. not fewer, Lastly. I believe gun owners must do a little soul - searching and ask themselves exactly what kind 01 • message we're sending if we don't return the politt- cianswho supported us to Ottawa.
