federal
politics
, EXETER - As Huron Bruce Lib-
-- , eral. incumbent' Paul Steckle made
the rounds of campaign offices oh
election. day, the Mood • was one of
optimism.- •
Steckle told the T -A support has
been solid in Huron County and • .
•.any negativism has been dit'ected
at the party or its leadership not the
individual. He. felt people ,were
generally pleased with the represen-
tation he provifiedover the,.past
'four years and said he could not
have given more.
"I feel did all the things I had
anticipated I might do," he said,
adding gun control became a na-
tional issue during his term.
Facing a new term, Steckle said
his priorities will' be. deficit reduc-:
tion, debt retirement and tax reduc-
tion.. The Liberals anticipate •the
deficit will be reduced to zero
within two years after which the fo-
cus will shift to the debt and tax
cuts.
"How we (Id that...I'm prepared
to come back to my constituents
and say, give me some direction:
How do you want us to proceed?" .
Job creation is an important issue
".for Steckle who believes a positive
spirit and more confidence is neces-
sary for a healthy economy. He
said the federal Liberals have been
able to make great strides in reduc-
ing the deficit; an achievement that
was rarely discussed during this
election' campaign.
"Four years ago. we looked at
this country mired in debt and ir-
•revocably in a direction of defi-
• cit...We've done this... We're see-
ing the end."
He •added the government can
only create the climate for job crea-
tion by private business through a
solid dollar, low interest rates, high
exports and low inflation.

Baby birds and animals
should be left alone
HURON COUNTY - Spring. The
sun is warmer, the leaves are turn-
ing green andnew life is •ery-
where. It's a nm. of year when
most people are anxious to get.out-
side and enjoy nature.. It's also the
time of year when birds and ani-
mals in the wild give birth. Baby
animals and birds- are sometimes
discovered in woodlots, fields, gar-
dens and waterways.
Sometimes that baby bird or ani-
mal may seem helpless or .aban-
doned. For many people; their first
instinct is to "rescue" the baby and
take it home with them. It's a well-
meaning idea, but not in the best in-
terests of the animal.
The Ministry of Natural Resourc-
es recommends that people leave a
baby animal or bird 'where it is
found.
Baby animals are seldom aban-
doned. Parents are usually close by
and actively caring for their young-
sters. Handling a young animal -
even momentarily -.can discourage
the parents from returning to it. Jf-
you discover a baby animal or bird,
the hest policy is to.,leave it alone.
Taking a wild bird or animal
hot:.; can be a death sentence for it.
They don't 'make good pets. Feed-
ing them pet food doesn't usually
provide what they . need in their
diets and most wildlife need very
special habitats to survive.
Under Ontario's Game and Fish
Act,' no native wildlife can be kept
in captivity for more than 10 days
without authorization from the
Ministry of Natural Resources. -
The best way to protect young
birds or animals is to protect their
habitat. By learning more about..
wildlife, protecting young animals
and birds from children and house- -
hold pets, and. conserving and
cleaning up the environment. peo-
ple can make a real contribution.
which will have an immediate and
a long-term benefit to wildlife.
That's the best way to protect birds
and animals.
