Exeter Public School princi- pal Jim Chapman retired this week after 15 years at the lo- cal school. He began his teaching career in 1952 at S.S. 6 in Hibbert Township. Chap- man recalls his first salary was $2,350 per annum. 20 YEARS AGO June 2, 1977 - Deb Ford, 18, of Grand Bend was .crowned Queen of the annual At Home dance at South Hu- ron District High School, Fri- day night. The Exeter PUC learned Monday that it would cost roughly $200,000 to have me- ters installed for all water cus- tomers. With that information at . hand, commissioners took no action on the subject. Pearson of Sarnia has served notice that carousers at Grand Bend will pay heavily for their revelry this summer. • He is levying fines of $100 and costs for liquor offenses and a minimum of $200 for creating disturbances. Further, fines must be paid at the time of conviction or jail terms of 15 days for liquor offenses and 30 days for disturbances will be levied. . 35 YEARS. AGO June 3, 1962 - Over 150 cars have been checked in a three- day safety check carried out by the Exeter police department this week. They warned that, as of Thursday, they will begin to press charges. At a meeting of the South Huron Agricultural Society in Hensall, Tuesday evening, W.R. Dougall was presented with an agricultural services award for over 50 years of ser- vice to the fair board. 40 YEARS AGO June 3, 1957 - Huron MPP Tom Pryde announced this week that a contract has been let to Brennan Paving of Ham- ilton for the surfacing of High- way 84 from Hensall to St. Jo- seph. On Tuesday, Rev. Harold Snell who is entering his tenth year as pastor of James Street United Church in Exeter was elected president of the Lon- . don Conference of the United Church of Canada. A.J. "Jake" Sweitzer was one of three Lions elected as Cana- _ dian directors of Lions Interna- tional at the recent convention for Ontario and Quebec held recently in Peterborough. SO YEARS AGO June 1, 1947 - There are nu- merous farmers who have not sown one kernel of spring grain. An old timer says he doesn't remember when rain fell constantly for 36 hours as it did Sunday and Monday. Council Monday night ap- proved- preliminary plans for an Exeter District High School. SS YEARS AGO June 2, 1942 - W.J. Routly has been appointed road super- intendent of Usborne Town- ship. R.N. Creech has resigned his position as treasurer of the Ex- eter Agricultural Society and secretary Clark Fisher has been appointed to take his place. Fifty-five Japanese lads from British Columbia arrived at Centralia station in their own special car Tuesday to work in the. sugar beet fields. of which there are about 1,500 acres in the district. 75 YEARS AGO June 1, 1922 -Hydro workers have been busy at Crediton. wiring up some of the houses in preparation forthe coming of hydro. It is expected the lines will be completed by the end of August. The May 24 holiday passed quietly in Exeter. A number of the citizens spent the day in their gardens, others at the bowling green or fishing and several went to Grand Bend. 80 YEARS AGO June 1, 1917 - The citizens of Exeter are being liberally supplied with nice fresh white- fish from Grand Bend at fre- quent intervals. Tribute paid to GB minister GRAND BEND - It was Trinity Sunday at Grand Bend United Church on May 25. The scriptures were read by Marilyn Beattie. The sermon by Rev. Rd Putman was a "Dialogue for Trinity - Who is this God Anyway?" with parts taken by Edward Avey, Joan Eagleson, Bar- ry Nichols and Cathy Southcott. The choir's anthem was "Glory to the King of Kings." A tribute was paid to Rev. Put- man as it has been 25 years since he was ordained. Assisting in the tribute were Rev. Maurice Platts, Rev. Mervyn Love and Rev. Earl Burr. Prayers of the people were given by Bob Southcott. A thank you note was received from the Huron County Children's Aid Society and the Grand Bend Christian Development Committee for the gifts of sunscreen, sleeping bags and life jackets. June 1 was the annual U.C.W. Thankoffering service at Grand Bend United Church. They are cel- ebrating the 35th year of the amal- gamation of United Church Women and the . 125th anniversary of the congregation and 70 years since the church was built. The guest speaker was Edna Frampton, Clerk of the Session and Convenor of the Chris- tian Education Committee. Her top- ic was "It's Wonderful." Lynn Douglas performed two so- los accompanied by recorded mu- sic. Scriptures were read by Bette Tufts. The children's story was given by Trish Murdock. She gave each child a bean and told them children grow up like plants. Joan Eagleson gave a closing prayer. U.C.W. Pres- ident Evelyn Johnston conducted the service. Flowers in the sanctu- ary were placed by the family in memory of Olive Webb. Grand Bend Golden Agers held their last euchre party for the sea- son on May 28 at the Legion with nine tables in play. Winners were: Ladies high - An- nie Morenz, 75; Ladies low - a tie between Shirley Eagleson and Ha- zel Willert, 51; Ladies most lone hands - Cathy Junker, 4; Mens high - Nola Love playing a man's card, 84; Mens low - a tie between Cleve Brophey and Henry Vander Burgt, 45; Most lone hands - won by Elda Adams playing a man's card, 4.
