SOUTH HURON DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL
STUDENT OF TRE TEAR
Student of the Year will be announced at.South Huron's formal -Friday, June 6, 1997 at Midnight
TONI DeJONG
Toni belong has learned valuable lessons through her
involvement at South Huron. She has gained confidence,
friendship, and personal satisfaction.
Through her participation in athletics she has learned
perseverance, and hard work. Volleyball, track, curling
and field hockey have expressed to her the importance of
team work.. She was captain of the field hockey team for
the past 2 years, where she developed confidence in
leadership positions.
Gaining a position on the Cabinet of the Western -East
region of the Ontario Secondary School Students
Association has taught her that involvement at school is
an important part of education. Being the yearbook co-
editor last year, a member of the athletic council for 5
years, and a recipient of the Excellence in Public
Education award, has helped her to be elected to a
cabinet post, as well as currently holding the position of
Athletic Chairperson on the Student's Council.
Through all of this, she has made friendships that will
always remind her of her years at South Huron. Next year
she hopes to attend York University to study theatre.
Toni is the daughter of Tony and Pam DeJong of Exeter.
CARA GARDNER
During her 5 years at South Huron, Cara Gardner has contributed most
of her time to athletics.
Her dedication and hard work has helped the athletic program at South
Huron reach new heights. Throughout her high school career. Cara has
worn the Panther jersey for 5 different teams. She started all 5 years on
the field hockey team and is consequently a 3 -time OFSAA champron.
Besides field hockey she has also played on the volleyball. rugby. and
soccer teams, and was the only female to ever play on the boy's ice
hockey team. Cara has been named the Most Valuable Player in every
sport she has attempted. She was also named Female Athlete of the Year
in 1994, 1995., and 1996.
Cara takes great pude in representing her school, her community and
her province. In 1995. she was chosen to represent S.H.D.H.S. and
Huron County at the Ontano Educational Leadership Camp. She has also
competed at several provincial and national championships including the
Ontario Summer and Winter Games. as well as the Canada Winter Games.
• • Because of these events. Cara realizes the importance of giving back
to her community. She is a referee and instructor in both ringette and ice
hockey, and also runs field hockey clinics for grade school students.
With all these extracurricular activities. Cara still managed to find the
time to tutor other South Huron students in math and science. and make
the honour roll in 93 & 94. Along with )his she also has been involved with
0.S.A.I.D.. Student's Council, and be an active member of She Athletic
Council for all five years.
Cara will be remembered for her outgoing personality and infinite
school spirit. She will be attending Brown University in Boston this fall on
an Ice Hockey scholarship.
Cara is the daughter of Kay and Skip Gardner of Hensel!. -
ALISHA JENNISON
Alisha Jennison has had a productive and fun filled five
years atSouth Huron. She has achieved success in her
academic pursuits as well as her extra curricular activities.
She has attended various' leadership conferences which
have helped to make her high school years successful.
Alisha has been an active member in the Peer
Mentoring program for two years, assisting for one year on
the Activities Committee, an OSAID member for four years
and has. also been a member of the Sexual Assault Team:_
Musically, she has played the barisax in both the South
Huron Jazz Band and Wind Ensemble for four years.
Outside of school, her athletic side shines through on the
ice with the junior precision team, the Exeter Classics.
This year, Alisha has acted as Assistant Social
Convenor on the 1996-97 Student's Council.
She feels her greatest accomplishment this rear was
acting as student co-ordinator for OSAID. f
Her participation in all of these school groups and
activities have added enjoyment and pride to her
memories of South Huron.
Alisha is the daughter of Richard and Wendy Jennison of
Grand Bend.
STEPHANIE PEARSON
Stephanie has taken part in a plethora of activities
during her five years at S.H.D.H.S. She has played
volleyball for 2 years and was a member of the basketball
team for 5. Drama has allowed her to act as a co -
assistant director, stage manager, actor,.d stagehand
for 7 different school productions. As a baritone and
trombone player, she has continued to be active in the
Music department. During 1996, she was Photo Editor of
the yearbook. She has had the opportunity to be a junior
leader at Camp Sylvan, has been a coach for the
Elementary School Basketball Clinic for 3 years, and has
recently been presented with an award of Excellence in
Education. Stephanie feels that her role as the 1996-97
Student Council Co -Premier has been her most
challenging and most rewarding experience also allowing
her to travel to Edmonton last October to take part in the
1996 Canadian Student Leadership Conference.
Even with this busy extracurricular calendar, she has
maintained academic standing on the honour roll for all
five years of her high school career. Next year Steph
hopes to study history at Queen's University.
She is the daughter of Teri and Drftug Pearson, of Exeter.
JAYNE WESTLAKE
Jayne Westlake has enjoyed an active, yet successful, high
school career. She has participated in many extracurricular
activities which have contributed to the numerous fond memories
she has of South Huron District High School. During her 5 years
at South Huron she has been a committed participant of the
instrumental music program as the lead french horn player in the
Wind Ensemble and Concert Band and as a keyboard player in
the Jazz Band.
Jayne has also been involved in music outside of school,
receiving her Royal Conservatory Grade Nine Piano credit with
Honours.
Jayne's athletic participation in the basketball program of
South Huron for 5 years has taught her the importance of a
group effort. She was recognized for her responsibility, attitude,
and effort in basketball as the recipient of the R.A.E. Award.
In her 3rd year at South Huron, Jayne was selected to attend a
forum for Canadian students in Ottawa entitled, 'Adventures In
Citizenship-.
Jayne has shared her time with other students as a Peer Tutor
for 4 years and as a Peer Mentor for 2 years. Through Peer
Mentoring she has been a member of the Healthy Lifestyles
Committee this year. The year Jayne has been a member of
O.S.A.I.D. and she has enjoyed her responsibilities as secretary
of the students' council.
Throughout all of her activities, Jayne has achieved an Honour
Roil standing for each of the 5 years in high school. She recently
received an Excellence In Education Award.
Jayne is the daughter of Robert and Alma Westlake of Zurich.
ERIC CLAY
Enc Clay has successfully integrated his academics with
various extra -curricular activities throughout his 5 years at South
Huron. Presently, Eric is a Co -Premier for the Student's Council
after being elected to this position with a memorable speech.
His leadership abilities were enhanced after attending the
Canadian Student Leadership Conference in Edmonton, Alberta.
Enc was an active member of the concert and jazz bands at
South Huron for the first four years of high school. He played the
saxaphone amazingly in a manner comparable to Kenny G. This
career prospect was destroyed due to a tragic pumpkin/knife
accident. While at S.H.D.H.S..
Enc has also obtained honours standing every year along with
top class marks in Music and OAC chemistry. He has also been
able to use his academic talent to by tutoring other in the area of
calculus. He has acted as a prefect this year where he has been
able to use his enormous size to control the crowds at the
dances. Presently, Eric is the assistant coach for Boys' Soccer in
Grand Bend.
Not only is Eric.known for having the cutest dimples in the
school, but also for having a very ambitious outlook on life. He
plans to attend the University of Western in the fall to study
Biological Sciences.
Enc is the son of Bob & Yvonne of Grand Bend.
JEFF DeBLOCK
In Jeff's high school career he has enjoyed being involved with a vanety
of activities and teams while managing to achieve high academic
standards. •
Since grade 9. he has played the baritone sax in both the jazz band and
the wind ensemble. In 1994 he helped the Wind Ensemble capture a gold
medal at the Nationals. Early on in his high school life he sang in the choir
but later deemed himself as being vocally challenged. After that he went
on to pursue another noon hour activity. Reach for the Top. In the 3 years
DeBlock has played Reach, he has piled up an mass of obscure knowledge
and been on two Huron championship teams. Recently they competed in
Toronto and managed to rank as one of the top 30 teams in the province.
With regards to athletics. Jeff ran with the Cross Country team for 4
years, and has been a member of the school Curling team for 5. In both
sports he played. Jeff has shared Huron and Huron -Perth titles with fellow
teammates. In the past eight summers he has been a visible part of the
community white umpinng slo-pnch and softball m the surrounding area.
Last year OeBlock represented S.H.D.H.S. as Student Trustee for the
Huron Board. This year he followed up his interest in student government
as being a Member of Student's Council.
Jeffs future intentions are to become employed in the financial sector
but has not ruled out the possibilities of acting as a Rowan Atkinson (Mr.
Bean) look alike or else becoming the stage Tanager for a travelling
hypnotist show. This fall he plans to study Economics at either Laurier. or
Waterloo University where he will be sending his bills to hiSJproud parents
Jim and Betty DeBlock Of Exeter.
JASON GLAVIN
Jason Glavin has been actively involved in the academic.
athletic, and social aspects of high school in his/iive years at
South Huron., During this time he has had the pleasure of
working with many great people and makirlg several lasting
friendships.
Jason takes special pride in his academic achievement§, as
he has been on the honour, roll every year and is pursuing an
OAC average in the low to mid 90s. Athletically, he had the
fortune of playing on many talented hockey teams. He has been
a member of 2 Ontario championship teams in minor hockey, in
addition to being on the Exeter Hawks 1995-96 provincial
championship squad. Jason was the starting goalie for the
Panthers 1993-94 Huron- Perth hockey championship team, the
School's first. �
This year. he has been a member of the Student Council and
OSAID. in addition to his always unpredictable morning
announcements. One topic that stnkgs a special chord with
Jason and he is never short of opinions on is politics. He is an
active member of.the Huron -Bruce Progressive Conservative
Association, having been on a committee that sought out
prospective candidates for the federal election. He was also a
member of Colleen Schenk's canipaign team. He will be
attending Queen's University in the fall to pursue a honours
degree in Political Studies. '
Jason is the son of Mike and Betty Glavin of Crediton.
ERIC HLINDEY
Enc Hundey has had an active role in all aspects of high school
life during his five years at South Huron.
Musically, Eric has been involved with, the venous school bands
and ensembles for four years.
Eric was the Band's co -president for the '95-96 school year.
and presently plays the tenor sax in both the Wind Ensemble and
Black Jau Band.•
' In 1995-96, Enc was a member of the Guidance Support Team
assisting grade nines with their transition to high school. During
this time he also acted on the S.H.D.H.S. Yearbook staff.
On the sport side. Eric ran cross country and played soccer for
four years before blowing out his knee last April. Despite this
setback. Enc managed to stay active in athletics. He assisted
Mr. fulop with the cross country team, who had an exceptionally
strong year. to the sprang, he also helped Mr. Shore coach the
junior boys' soccer team to an undefeated regular season.
Enc was this year's Students' Council treasurer. Along with his
numerous monetary responsibilities. he contnbuted tremendously
to the every day running of this years council.
With all of this extracurricular participation in his repertoire. •
Enc has managed to maintain a High academic standing by being
on the honour roll since grade 9. During these'5 years he has
also ranked ''trice in the top 4 averages In his grade level. Next
year Enc hopes to attend the University of Waterloo to study
Mathematics.
Eric is the son of Rick and Jane Huntley of Exeter.
GAVIN POOLE
In his years as a student, Gavin Poole has made a consistent
effort at being an integral part of the many aspects of South
Huron life. Athletically, Gavin was an athlete in the loosest
sense of the word. He played on the volleyball team for one year.
and on the basketball team for 5 years. co -captaining the team in
his last year. He was also very active in intramural sports.
In addition to athletics Gavin participated in Student .
Government on many different levels.
Poole was a student representative for one year, and spent his
final year labouring tirelessly as Social Convenor.
Other extra curricular activities Gavin participated in include
the South Huron grad school basketball clinic, assistant directing
and appearing in the community production of the Lion King,
appearing in productions of Blind Dates and Listen to the Wind,
and being a member of the Sexual Assault Committee. Gavin
also helped coach the Midget Boys' Basketball team.
Gavin Is perhaps most renowned for his participation on the
Reach for the Top team. Being a member for 5 years, Poole
captained the team in his final two years.
Although his attendance record may not reflect it, Gavin
believes a good education is essential to succeeding in life. At
the present time, Gavin plans on travetNng next year.
Gavin is the son of Barbara and George Poole.
