contracts
DASHWOOD - CUPE Local
2597 South Huron Community Liv-
ing employees ratified their • con-
tract last Wednesday night after
nearly ,18 months of negotiation.
According to media contact Trevor
McGregor, the 70 full-time and
part-time union members did not
vote unanimously in favor of the
new agreements that expired July
1994 and September 1995.
Gary Luker, a government media-
tion officer, was appointed to con-
clude thc collective agreement af-
ter union members rejected a
Community Living proposal in
April. This decision resulted in a
98 per cent majority strike man-
date. • Both parties in the nego-
tiations were pleased a strike was
avoided.
"Thcrc will be no labor dispute,"
said McGregor, adding, "There arc
still some outstanding issues."
Contentious issues with the union
include employees who have bccn
on the same pay phrase for four
years as well as managers who
have been promoted. He said al-
though management has increased,
there has not been the same attar -
lion paid to front-line staff. Man-
agement is also offered a pension
plan that is not available to front
line staff.
Union staff are also concerned
with talk of potential amalgama-
tion. The union hopes to be in-
volved with personnel discussions
in an effort to keep its membership
informed.
Community Living Board Pres-
ident Paul Turnbull agreed the set-
tlement is in the best interest of the
clients.
"it's been quite a long time bat-
ting this thing around, and it's just
nice to put it to bed," said Turn -
