LiSTOWEL - For the second consecutive year the South Huron District High School senior boys soccer team wan the Huron -Perth Championship after defeating Lis- towel on Monday. The Panthers won • the evenly matched game,in a shootout af- ter an overtime frame couldn't break a• 1-1 deadlock. • Dave Farquhar scored South Huron's goal in regulation play. A strong wind blowing down the length of, the field played a prom- inent role in .the game and both' teams took advantage of it scoring - 'their .goals. when it aided them. Tight defence and strong goal - keeping on both sides prevented the winning goal from settling the game sending it into a shootout. All five South Huron shooter found their mark and a Listowel player missed giving the visiting Panthers the decision. "I hate to see it come to that. No- body wins in. a shootout,' said coach George McEwan who vivid- ly remembers the last time he lost a 11-P final in a shootout situation. "BUt it was a tight game and both teams showed why they've made it as far as they have." South -Huron earned a berth in the H -P finals on Friday after defeating F.E. Madill 4-0 in the Hu: ion semi-finals and Sea - forth 3-0 in the finals on• Friday on goals by Far- quhar, Chad Gilfillan, Like Sims • and Trevor Boersma. SHDHS Awards Banquet South Huron District High School will hold its annual Awards Banquet on June 3 to mark the end of the 1995-96 season. Last year.85 ' awards were handed out to students that excelled in their .chosen 'sport. The top junior/senior athletes will be recognized and the prestigious Paw and Panther awards will be presented as well. • Guest .speaker is Justine Blainey. Last year the banquet was well at- tended and their were a few "tok- en" awards presented to coaches as some of the students highlighted the year. Juniors' undefeated streak ends EXETER - The Exeter Co-op Junior baseball team split a pair of games last week beating St. Marys 11-1 on,Thursday before dropping a one -run decision} .to Byron on ,Sat- i, urday Dwight Gingerich pitched a strong seven innings . against St. Marys recording five strikeouts,' .walking five batters while allowing only four hits. Scot Kemp pitched the last two innings allowing two hits and striking out two: Exeter defense was strong, com- mitting only two errors in this nine inning contest. Exeter Co-op Junior bats contin- ued strong with Scot Kemp hitting four singles, Jason Maskell with three singles, Bill Hodge, a double and a single and Dale Hepf with two singles. Darryl Hartman, Blake Schade, Dwayne McNab and Dwight Gingerich all 'hit well, placing sin- gles. Exeter 7 vs, Byron 8 The Exeter Co-op Juniors went into this game with a perfect 3-0 record and the players knew they had their work cut out for them, as Byron . also- had a . perfect 3-0 record. Byron scored two in the first, one in the third, two in the sixth, one in the seventh, and two in the bottdm of the ninth. Exeter scored one in the third inning, three in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the eight. The. Co-op Juniors were leading 7-6 with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Relief pitcher Dwayne McNah gave up two home runs to the last two batters. • McNab pitched in the seventh, eighth -and ninth innings: He pitched well, and after watching two two balls blasts over the centre - field fence he asked "Can I have the start against Byron the next game?" Leftie Darryl Hartman pitched .a strong six innings with some good defense behind him. Short stop Dwight Gingerich made -an impres- sive hack hand ground ball and - threw out the Byron runner at first and centrefielder Bill Hodge caught 'a diving catch to take away an extra base hit by Byron. Madill and Seaforth before -defeating Listowel in a shootout for the H -P title on Monday. Lucan players help AAA hockey team to tournament finals LUCAN - The Mid -Elgin Red- wings Tyke select hockey team competed in the Toronto 'AAA' spring hockey tournament May 24 and 25 and were undefeated in round-robin play. They beat Vaughn 'AAA' Rang- ers 2=Q Toronto Rangers Sciccts 8- 0, Toronto 'AAA' Village Mad Dogs 3-2, and tied Toronto 'AAA' Rangers 1 I. They advanced to the final and outplayed and outshot the Detroit Little Ccasers 'AAA' team but couldn't beat a hot goaltender in losing 2-0. . The team is made up of players from Lucan, Dorchester, Mount Brydgcs and Parkhill. Goaliender David McDonald earned two shutouts 'and posted a goals against average of 1.00.
