Oakwood Park celebrated its 75th anniversary by launching a book chronicling the history of
the park through the memoirs of residents, past and present. Author Dean Robinson, sitting,
took a break from autographing books to pose with, from left, Pat Reeve, book launch man-
ager, Philip Walker, a major contributor to the book, Gord Steed, past president of the Oak-
wood Park Association who came up with the idea for the book two years ago, and this
year's president Fred Lewis.
History of Oakwood
outlined in new book
GRAND BEND - On May 17, Oakwood Inn hosted a very special
event, the introduction of a new book "Froin Walker's Folly to Fabu-
lous.:.75 Years of Oakwood 1922-1997." The book is a compilation of the
history of the creation and development of the hotel, golf course and sub-
division by three generations of the Walker family, plus the memories of
residents, past and present, who lived there. Author Dean Robinson of
Stratford, collected all these contributions of facts, anecdotes and photo-
graphs, and turned them into an interesting history of this area of southern
Huron County, growing up next to Grand Bend on Ontario's west coast.
The 200+ page book contains over 100 photographs and the colorful
cover features the artwork of Oakwood resident Barbara Jackson. Most of
the historical data was provided by Philip F. Walker, son and grandson of
the founder of Oakwood. The idea for such a book came from past presi-
dent Gord Steed, of Stratford, who became a resident of Oakwood Park
eight years ago.
He contacted the author, Dean Robinson, who had written a number of
such historical books for Seaforth, Mitchell and area. It's taken two years
to get all the submissions together, edited, printed, and presented into a
book, that, while very special to Oakwood, can be enjoyed by anyone who
has ever loved summers at "The Bend."
The book can be purchased form several Oakwood residents, including
Philip Walker, Pat Arthur, and Gord Steed. Plans are being made to have
a few copies available for collectors at museums and local book stores.
