Media skunked, indicates fish
will bite for Grand Bend derby
By Chris Skalkos
T -A Reporter
GRAND BEND - Grand Bend
Salmon and Trout Fishing Derby
organizers are convinced the fish in
Lake Huron are conspiring to give
the annual derby badpress.
For the last three, years, organiz-
ers have invited members of local
media for a day of fishing in hopes
one, or all of them. hook into. a
'large fish and share the thrilling ex-
perience with their readers, viewers
and listeners in their next publica-
tion or broadcast. But for the last
three years the fish have refused to
cooperate sending the media 'home
without one fish tale to tell.
But the cold blooded critters have
no problem biting once the derby
begins and that's what is probably
going io happen during this year's
derby.
Tim Steele. Derby Committee
chairperson. said he expects the
fishing to be even better this year
because the derby starts later be-
ginninp on May 23 and continues
to June 1. As a result the water tem-
-permute 'will- be warmer and the
fish more.active. -.
When the Grand Bend Salmon
and Trout Derby Committee de-
layed last year's event due to a late
thaw on Lake Huron. anglers
caught more fish than the year be-
fore.
Last year 650 tickets were sold
and anglers hooked approximately
750 fish. Two local .anglers won
first and third when Dwight Shep-
herd of Dashwood reeled in a 21.32
pound Salmon -taking first place
and Theresa Brenner of Grand
Bend came in third with a 19.25
pound Salmon. The top fish in -the
Trout division went to Barry Nash
who weighed , in a 11.57 • pound
trout.
Organizers want to sell sell 100
more' tickets for this year's event
they .hope to lure in more fishing
enthusiasts -by baiting- them with
mom -prizes in the trout division.
:Now the- top= ten- trout will e "
awarded prizes whereas last year it
was limited to the top three.
There is a $6,000 cash value
prize for the top salmon and a
$1,000 cash value prize for the top
trout.
Like last year, the derby will see.
a prize awarded daily for the
biggest fish of the day regardless of
where it weighs in the overall
standings. The daily winner Will -re-
ceive a Shimano Triton Rod and
Reel valued at approximately $150.
Ticket prices for the Grand Bend.
Derby are $15.
