McCurdy students design *inn!ng veterans' web site
The site should be up and running soon under the Veterans' Affairs homepage
By Heather Mir
T -A Reporter, •
HURON PARK - Two McCurdy Public School
students have gained national recognition for ,
their winning design of a Veterans Affairs Web
Page. The design contest was part of last year's
Veteran's Week activities and more than 180
students entered the junior category for those
aged 13 to 15. Although Grade 7 students Chris
Arnold and Hung Vo were a year too young for
the junior.category, they were permitted to submit
a design that included a tribute to_terans of the
First'and Second World Wars as well as the
Korean War. Eye-catching color and a user-
friendly snapshot gallery were important features
in the site design that included links to related
• sites.
"What we tried to do was give it a lot of color," -
said Chris, explaining site design was restricted to
200 kB uncompressed and could not have
• Netscape PIug-ins.
They captured Internet graphics such as a red
poppy which became a key part of the site's bold
design. They also wrote a short explanation or
how men and women's efforts during the three
conflicts contributed to the lifestyle we enjoy
today.
The boys have caught on to a technology that ,
evades many adults and already Arnold is taking
an entrepreneurial initiative by designing
homepages for people in his community. He is
also working on a homepage for himself and uses
the Internet to talk with students in other
countries.
Under the direction of vice-principal Niall
Straw, McCurdy students have learned to use
computers as tools that assist them in researching
and presenting projects. The school is careful to •
ensure students do not reveal their last names, •
addresses or photographs when using the
Internet.
Arnold and Vo were involved in a level three
enrichment workshop recently held in Zurich and
ate now teaching a level two workshop for grade
1 to 5 students. They hope to raise money for a
flat-bed scanner and are excited about the
"Quick -Cam" technology recently acquired that
allows students to take a digital photo of an
image and download it to the computer where it
can be stored, imported into a document or
printed. The only drawbacks to computers
supplied by the school board are there aren't
enough available and the ones they have need
more power to operate software properly. Straw
encourages students to learn:by exploring •
software and insists each child pass on their new
knowledge to another student.
Arnold and Vo will formally present the web
site at the Exeter Branch Legion on May 2: where
they will receive an award for their efforts.
